Thread: Why no sound?

I spend days downloading series one (season one to you Merkins) of 'I'm Alan Partridge and it has downloaded successfully with all the episodes as seperste Quicktime files which is wonderful, and I did it all by myself.

But there is no sound.

I clicked on this link: Apple - QuickTime - QuickTime Components

But it made me confused.

Please help.

Install VLC, that will probably play it correctly.

I have VLC - that will give me sound but no picture... You'd think in this day and age it could do both.I will try to open the file with VLC but it's a Quicktime file so I doubt it.

Works with VLC, it's not quite as smooth but if Quicktime wants to deprive me of sound with no explanation then what can I do?

Thanks Slack, it would have taken me lots of reading to find that out on Google whereas here I can pose the question, tidy my room, make some breakfast, reply to a few emails and have a solution which all confused TD members (those who use computers) can benefit from.

Shame VLC stops for a split second every now and again - ruining vital bits of dialogue, is there anything I can do to get Quicktime running with sound and vision?

Also check what codec the files you are downloading are, and make sure you have an up to date version of that codec. A lot of series of the internet are DivX do you have the DivX codec installed?

^ Downloading now from my link in the OP - cheers, there were about 12 to choose from and I didn't know which one I needed.

Figured out DVIX and opened the Alan Partridge downloads with it and was told that 'I may need an additional audio decoder to play this file'.

Really, I would just like a simple life and be able to play it on Quicktime with sound... I mean, this is a BBC show recorded in 1996 - not the Avatar trailer.

It's times like this when I wish I had a VHS player just like the old days.

^ if you want something simple when it comes to playing Divx and Xvid, you will need to install WinXP

the irony of that platform being "video friendly" is that it doesn't play anything that Apple doesn't approve when it's in competition with QuickTime

Try downloading and installing Perian. It's a bunch of plugins/codecs (or whatever they are called) for Quicktime. You install it then open your files as normal with Quicktime and don't forget to cross your fingers.

Exactly, Perian is a "must have" on Mac.

Scampy, you should install MplayerOSX extended as well, nice piece of software.
