    Networking a printer

    Fuck I'm pissed off.

My Thinkpad networks to the desktop without any problems. I can share files and print off the printer connected to the desktop via USB. No network issues at all.

The Compaq on the other hand is fucking me around. I can see the desktop in the printer network setup, but there is no printer showing attached to the pc.

Firewalls are all open, nothing is blocking any connections.

Anybody know? I hate networking at home

I've added a password to my useraccount for this pc. that was suggested on one website and that hasn't worked.

    Pisses me off.

When you go to control panel, system, hardware, device manager do you see the printer listed?

If so, do you see an x or ! telling you something is not right? If you click on properties what does it say?

If not, are you sure the drivers are installed? Already ran the disk that came with the computer I assume.

If you power up the printer while the computer is working do you see anything that says new hardware found?

If you power down the printer while the computer is working do you get a message?

What operating system are you using? Sounds like XP or earlier version because Vista is pretty good about finding new hardware.

Under the start menu you're looked at printers and faxes installed if you're running windows XP I assume?

I assume you are running the printer directly to the computer and not through a hub which could cause a problem.

In an effort to help -- if the printer has networking built-in, and is of relatively newer vintage (less than two years old), download Apple's 'Bonjour for Windows' - which installs the standard ZeroConfiguration protocol, along with the printer configuration 'wizard'.

It makes hooking up, and sharing, printers as easy as on the Mac.

It's a free download from Apple.

From his description, it is a USB printer connected to one of his computers and that computer then shares the printer resource over the network so
installing Bonjour will prolly not help since this is not a true network printer.

Bonjour may have been improved since I last used it a year ago or so, had to remove it since it fekked up other network services and programs.

seems that the user is not authenticated in the shared PC, or that the Shared Printer has not authorized "anonymous" or "network" access

very easy to fix, 5 sec.
