Buying a Kindle or Sony Reader

Reading on a computer screen isn't nice, so I guess I should go and buy a Kindle or Sony Reader.

Any recommendations on where I can get such a beast in Thailand?

personally I would stay right away from those 2 ebook readers.

I read alot on my PDA but would look at buying one of the chinese ebook readers on the market

something that takes SDHC cards , has internal memory and maybe wifi and runs embedded linux

There was an interesting article at theregister.co.uk the other day about modding/hacking an e-book reader to improve the features but they still seem rather limited for the outlay needed.

I'd get a netbook with lots more capability or a new printer over one of those things.

Tell me more, tell me more. What are these Chinese ebook readers called, where can I get them and how much do they cost?

Never heard about anything but the Sony Reader and the Kindle, but I'm surely open to better/cheaper alternatives.

I would wait until, oh, I don't know, maybe January, or February..

though we can't be far off seeing lots of arm cpu android MID's that will work fine as an ebook reader / video player / web browser.

I have a sony PRS505 that I bought in the UK 3 years ago.

Sony do not supply or support ebook readers in Thailand. In fact they only supply and support their new daily edition series in the US and Canada. I love my Sony but this attitude really annoys me.

Personally I wouldn't touch a kindle. Amazon have blocked it so you can only use their proprietary format (.awz). You can use pdf but you have to send it to them first for conversion. With Amazon you can only download mp3's in the US so it may be the same with ebooks. I'm not sure but it's worth checking if you are thinking of buying a kindle.

My son works in Taiwan so I am going to get him to look around for me. Apparently there is a color ebook reader being made in China now. Failing that I am going back to UK for a visit in the summer so I will have to pick up a new one then. My current ebook reader is starting to show signs of wear after 3 years continual use.

I bought a "Free 3G" Kindle, but unfortunately coverage in the sandpit is patchy, so I'm going to take it to Thailand on my next trip and load it up.

But I downloaded a load of free books onto it, and I have to say it is quite a stupendously readable device, and much lighter than I envisaged.

There are plenty of ways to get other documents onto it (you don't have to send a PDF for conversion, why not do it yourself, or do it online?).

But the Amazon Bookstore (remember that's how the started) is huge and as a result their prices are so much cheaper than the paper version.

I don't know where you'd buy one in Thailand. I think that you can buy them off the Amazon website, you have to follow the links for "Look for important information related to your location" and click on the link for Thailand.

looking at buying an e reader the the better half and looking at all the reviews the kindle does seem to be the best. Even though they don't accept all forms of ebooks if you are patient there are plenty of free converters out there (was recommended calibre by a friend). At $149 USD + delivery ($15 to aus) directly through amazon, not a bad price for what's generally regarded as the best out there. They also set it up for you (ie align the kindle to your amazon account). Wouldn't bother with the 3G version myself, as I'm told connectivity isn't all that great and if you have wireless internet at home or work it's quicker to do the transfers and browsing for books that way.
Stay away from the kindles on ebay. From what I've seen they are simplyh too expensive... $50 to $100 more expensive than amazon.. whay bother?
As always, double check the regional compatability etc before you spend your hard earned.

Can't go past the Kindle 3. There is nothing to match it currently.

I bought a wireless one from Amazon for A$146 and sold it on E-bay for A$172 and then upgraded to the 3G model which is A$189 direct from Amazon. Punters are paying silly prices because they don't realise how cheap they are direct from supplier.

Half of my work involves reading PDFs of technical material and customer contracts so I can now do it on the beach. Fukin great!

I have seen a greyscale kindle that is all.

for out door reading on a LCD , I have found that if you invert the colours - white writing on a black background - it is quite easy to read
