    ADSL maximum speed

TOT have brought out a new scale of charges for ADSL
so it's time to change my package.

    These are my modem stats.
I guess I am about 3.5 km from the exchange.
What maximun speed should I go for ?

Line attenuation is fairly constant and US margin is steady but my DS margin varies from 1 to 12
I took the snapshot during last nights thunderstorm
It was still working with a DS margin of 1

    - 4M/512Kbps 790 บาท

    That's for existing customers

^ can't seem to find the rates for TRUE anywhere (their website is shit and out of date) but I'm paying 1150 for 2.5Mbps/512Kbps.

With 3.5km to the DSLAM , I would go for the 3Mbit package.

i haven't upgraded my tot package yet, but after a year of torrent download speeds being capped at 160 down and 35 up,my speeds mysteriously increased a few days ago to 220 down and 70 up.
this after week or so of generally awful internet connections.

also video and radio is suddenly streaming unbuffered after a few months of rubbish.

LOM, can you explain this ?

My DS margin has dropped to 1 again this morning but a local speed test still shows
1319/414 kbps which is the max I can expect on this package.

Is my modem giving a false figure ?

No, I think you misinterpret what the figures means.
The noise margin figures are target noise margins set by the modem when negotiating with the DSLAM and does not directly reflect phone line quality.

^ The 4MBit package may also work (your line attenuation is not bad) but you can always upgrade if you find the 3Mbit is stable.
You can see in the modem status page if the connection stays fixed at 3072/512 or
occasionally drops down (2816/512 for instance).

I don't think 4mb will be an option.
Attenuation will increase by 6db per mb which will take me past the limit

I don't think attenuation is a function of your download speed but merely based on your cable length and quality.

A downstream attenuation of 49dB allows for a downstream speed of ~5MBit.

Yes it is basically dependant on cable length but when you increase the line speed you start using higher frequencies and higher frequencies are more likely to be attenuated.
I have checked some more websites and the 6dB figure I quoted seems to be a bit high, site sites are saying only 1dB increase.

I got my ADSL package changed this morning.
From application to change over took 2 hours, pretty good service I reckon.
I now have a 3072/512 line for just 590 baht per month.
Thats twice the speed and 100 baht less than my old package.

It's working well and line attenuation has not increased at all, so bollocks to googling info in the future I will just ask Lom.

Well True have doubled my connection speed to 5Mbps. I didnt even call and complain. Downside is that it seems to lose the carrier more often.

I am waiting anxiously for my new package as well.

Right now I can only have 3Mbit/s DS because of the big distance to the DSLAM. They have now built DSLAMs in the streets with a distance of app. 150m to my house. I will get a package with 50MBit/s DS and 1Mbit/s US. That speed is only available in a package with IP-TV with more than 100 channels including channels like History Channel plus a lot of PayTV packages optional.

The whole package including 2 Telephone lines and flatrate for national telephone (without mobile), IP-TV, and DSL flatrate will cost me app. 60 Euro.
Well I hope the install will go through, there are still a few glitches in the system.

I could have used 25Mbit/s but the difference is just 3,50Euro so I opted for 50. Actually I would not really need the IP-TV because we have cable and satellite but I may get a football package so cheap with IP-TV that this is actually the cheapest option.

By the way on my satellite there are loads of erotic channels in arabic language. And a nice documentary channel of Chinese State TV CCTV in english.
