    Dead computer

Left my computer and went out shopping on Saturday. When I got home the computer was off, but the front light was still on. When I tried to switch it on again.... nothing. Assumed it was the power supply so bought a new one today..... but still nothing.

Anyone know what it could be? Dead processor? Motherboard?

had this problem with a computer a while back ended up being the MB. Not saying this is your problem, but it's a good possibility.

I think it's a very big possibility.... chances are the power supply died and took the motherboard with it

On the upside, it means I get to upgrade my computer....on the downside, I'll probably have to wait until next month.

So (assuming this is the problem) any advice on what motherboard and processor to buy?

This happened to my laptop several times when I forgot to switch it off and it automatically went into sleep mode and couldn't be turned on.I removed the battery and power supply and then reconnected again and that did the trick.

Try disconnecting your PC from the power supply again and try restarting it again.

Mine has done almost the same thing 3 times in the last few months. Turns itself on. I have to unplug it for 5 minutes, plug it back in and it fires right up. But the light is off as well.

I've got an Intel E8200. Any E8*** will do you. They run super cool, are quick and good value.

Butterfly said the ASUS motherboards are crap, so I got one of those too. It's great.

under Windows, blue screen, disappearing and re-installation of devices, power failure, devices no longer being recognized, disk controller error, etc... it's not really the full MB, but individual components failing, one by one

under Linux, the SCSI or IDE controller failing, reporting disk error even if the disk is healthy etc... cahotic behaviors in the OS, perfectly functioning software having strange bugs,

    what is your budget NickA?

If you look in the Frankensteins thread about the media center I put the specs up for a budget PC there.

You should be able to build a base system running dual core for 200-300 dollars easily. Nothing fancy.

They sell machines out here for 200 dollars with a 17in flat screen.

I presume you already have the screen so that's not an issue.

I would be looking at a Pentium4D (cheaper would be AMD not sure how much) - 1GB ram, cheapish video card e.g. 7600GS 256mb ram- one of the ones which linux likes can't remeber if it's ATI or Nvidia that has problems. Do you need a new HDD?
    PSU - 400w
If your old case is ATX then you can use that save 10 dollars or so.

    How sure are you?

Is the RAM fried? Did the HDD or video card get hit?

^Good point.... but I may need to buy a new video card anyway, if the new motherboard only has a PCI slot. I can borrow some memory from work to try out.

But at the moment I would just like some recommendations for motherboard + CPU in the 5,000 and less range.

second hand MB are about 1,000 to 2,000 in Pantip

why buy a new CPU ? make sure to find out which burnout first,

also some MB (Intel) go into sleep mode and don't wake up, I had that once. I had to remove the plug, reset the CMOS, wait for 1 week, and then it restarted

Motherboard wise - any Gigabit will do.

    Çູ¼îÇÎÀÇ ½ÃÀÛ ! ´Ù³ª¿Í (°¡°Ýºñ±³) - Danawa.com

It's in Korean but generally prices are cheaper in Thailand for parts.

I can see 2.8Ghz Pentium 4D's for $33 A mother board will be the same again.

So for 66 dollars you can have a new mobo and CPU.

You then have the choice of AMD.

Again it all about what you want to do with it.

What was your last processor? I know you said you encoded DVD's so a dual core would be a good move if you are still into that.

Avoid AMD at all cost, always had problem with them after a few years, random freeze, overheating etc...
