You can run but you can't hide

As EU turns the screw on Twitter it occurred to me the difference between teh liberal democracies however flawed and dictatorships

Twitter pulls out of voluntary EU disinformation code - BBC News

In democracies you can be challenged for telling lies
In places like Russia Burma China et al you are in trouble for telling the truth , LM anti defamation etc etc, this is why the treatment of Snowden. Assange and Manning is shooting the messenger for exposing wrongdoing

Twitter has pulled out of the European Union's voluntary code to fight disinformation, the EU has said.

Thierry Breton, who is the EU's internal market commissioner, announced the news on Twitter - but warned the firm new laws would force compliance.

"Obligations remain. You can run but you can't hide," he said.

Twitter will be legally required to fight disinformation in the EU from 25 August, he said, adding: "Our teams will be ready for enforcement."

Twitter has not confirmed its stance on the code or responded to a request for comment.

Dozens of tech firms both big and small are signed up to the EU's disinformation code, including Meta - which owns Facebook and Instagram - as well as TikTok, Google, Microsoft and Twitch.

The code was launched in June last year, and aims to prevent profiteering from disinformation and fake news, as well as increasing transparency and curbing the spread of bots and fake accounts.

Firms that sign the code can decide which pledges to make, such as cooperating with fact-checkers or tracking political advertising.

Under Elon Musk's ownership, moderation at Twitter has reportedly been greatly reduced - which critics say has allowed an increase in the spread of disinformation.

The social media giant used to have a dedicated team that worked to combat coordinated disinformation campaigns, but experts and former Twitter employees say the majority of these specialists resigned or were laid off.

Last month, the BBC found hundreds of Russian and Chinese state propaganda accounts were thriving on Twitter.

But Twitter boss Mr Musk claims there is now "less misinformation rather than more" since he took over last October.

Alongside the voluntary code, the EU has also brought in a Digital Services Act - a law which obliges firms to do more to tackle illegal online content.

From 25 August, platforms with more than 45 million monthly active users in the EU - which includes Twitter - will have to comply legally with the rules under the DSA.

The law will mean Twitter will have to have a mechanism for users to flag illegal content, act upon notifications "expeditiously" and put in measures to address the spread of disinformation.

On Friday, AFP news agency quoted a European Commission official as saying: "If (Elon Musk) doesn't take the code seriously, then it's better that he quits."

Disinformation is important to keep in check, but, so is information from a controlling government(s) or in the case of the EU, bureaucratic dictatorship

I think what we're talking about here are lies.

Like "Stop the Steal", "Russia didn't invade Ukraine" and "China isn't a predatory, parasitic lender".

So, battling disinformation and lies is a bad thing . . . as we can see in the US, the opposite has worked wonders for freedom.

As for 'bureaucartic dictatorship', you'll have to explain that one

. . . but then I guess the voluntary bit is prevalent in real dictatorships. It's great that Boris' and Farage's lies landed the UK in a place of misery and poverty, I guess. Success for the liars.

Misery yes especially if a Chelsea or Spurs fan, however despite all the turmoil people are still dying to escape Europe and risk lives and many thousands of dollars to arrive.

Not sure if you have visited since Brexit , while there are problems as in recession hit Germany or strike blighted France in sunny Dorset its sailing and an a nice lime sorbet in Lyme everyday, like La France Profonde in rich predominantly white rural Britain many people have never had it it so good.

Let me explain The 1980s big bang and relaxed credit led to a housing boom of which I and anyone who owned a property benefitted between 1970 and 8o most doubled , even more on London Bristol, Cambridge and Oxford where I was. This was repeated in Blair years. Those parents are now dying off leaving quite ordinary suburban villas that cost my dad 4k in 1950s nearer a million today , even rubbish flats in dodgy parts of the capital are 400k or $,5 million.

Similar booms happened in USA and Toronto and Sydney for similar reasons, easy long mortgages.

Of course those whose parents were poor, in public housing or rented will inherit a plastic bag of photos and bills most middle class kids who may well already have a foot on the housing ladder are like lottery winners esp the single child who won't need to share the largely untaxed windfall.T he standard Inheritance Tax rate is 40%. It's only charged on the part of your estate that's above the tax-free threshold which is currently £325,000.

Teresa May suggested homes be set against very expensive care costs , there was so much resistance this sensible and needed reform failed and no party has the guts to explain clearly that the young will have to foot the bill if wish to maintain people for years in residential homes rather than "mainly daughters' caring for the grandmas and grandpas at home.

This and the huge childcare industry are a flipside to women wanting well paid lifelong careers outside the home
