Thinking of buying a replacement colour printer

Time is approaching where i need to replace my old colour laser printer. The laser has done fine over the years and was great when i needed it more for work, but its had a few farts lately and looking forwards i will not need a laser so i'm considering an inkjet.

I used to hate the things years ago pre-laser as they'd smear and smudge, but i understand things have moved on from the late 80s/early 90s.

I've read loads of reviews and there's not much in it but i've narrowed it down to Cannon, Brother and Epson but there really ain't much to separate them.

Anyone got any suggestions? make or model. I don't need one to cough out high volume and high speed just fairly good quality.

If you don't use them regularly the ink drys in the nozzle and a general PITA.

While the printers are cheap, they make their money with the cartridges, so check the replacement cost.

Also check if if the installed cartridge in the new printer is a 1/2 filled cartridge ... should be in the specs.

Only boomers use printers anymore. Most offices here are paper free. But next to no one is working in an office right now.

No, I won't, I would just go to the local FedEx store for the rare time I need something printed. Maybe like twice a year. No need to have a bulky, archaic printer taking up space in the house.

^ Exactly... the bloody Norwegians won't give a C19 cert digitally, only by post. I have to show these paper copies at every border crossing. (The cert is only valid for 90 days... which is a huge problem, but not for this thread.)

I have a Brother printer and I'm away for long periods and it's been OK. I plugged it in and Windows 10 did all the rest. As said above, the printer is now disposable because the refills are what costs the money.

Definitely go for one with Wifi capability, I wish I had... then the daughter could sort her shit herself. But when the printer costs 4000 odd Baht and the refills are around 600 Baht each, the cost of the printer itself isn't really relevant.

that's good hear, just give it whirl occasionally like you need to with aircon in cars to stop the seals drying out.

I bought a cheap hp in 2020 to print papers in Thailand in order to get back to Germany. The cheap inkjet with an all colour and a black ink. Left it for 18 months and returned to find ink had dried but replaced the ink cartridges and all was fine. I removed them before leaving this time.
It was a 2600 series cheapie but did the job.

Ink jet printers are a fucking disastrous joke. My brand new HP 's black cartridge didn't work right out of the box. I search around for solutions. Guess one HP recommends ? Pull out the cartridge and let it sit upside down for a few hours. Then try again. That failed anyway.

I want to make a video about how to fix an HP ink jet. Then I'm gonna smash it to pieces with an axe in my driveway

Surely you can just take that back to the shop and show them.

It wasn't even the money that pissed me off. It was more than 3 months after I bought it. But it was the 2nd or 3rd print job.

^ and yet it failed right out of the box??

Anyway, no worries if you are in Thailand. The shop unboxed it, added the cartridges, and did some test prints for me.

Maybe because you were sucked into the scammy extended warranty. That's the only reason why they set it up for you. That's how it works here anyway

They're such a fucking rip off. The printers are pretty cheap but the cartridges they supply with them do a few pages and then you're into the great cartridge rip off. Snubby is right, it's cheaper in the long run to print at a shop as and when you need, which isn't that often these days.

NPT. It sounds like you are going to buy an ink jet. Keep us updated on how this goes.

A laser is black and white but it will last. I have a dusty old laser from 2014 that works fine

Exactly! Printers are about as useful as VHS players these days and unless they are industrial/business grade they suck ass.

No standard service in Thailand. The same as when you buy a screen guard they take the time to put it on your phone perfectly.
