Seekingasylum to replace 7 year old MacBook Air

My Air's battery was replaced three years ago but died again within months since when I have been permanently hooked up to a mains source which means if the magnet connection is dislodged for whatever reason the computer crashes and I have to re-boot.. The letter E tile on the keyboard jammed and had to be ejected hors de combat, permanently, but I can still type by pressing the sensor underneath. Otherwise it works fine and has served me well over the years but the faults are irksome and can only be remedied by sending the thing to Singapore which will doubtless cost several hundred bucks. Also, I am no longer supported by a freebie Monterey OS.

    So, time to renew.

I was of a mind to simply replace with a new MacBook Air which is now faster and sports a new display, greater memory and more storage capacity.

And then I discovered the new 13 inch iPad Pro and its magic keyboard accessory. In modern parlance, I "wuz blown away" and found it, as the septics often state, to be "ossome".

The design, the accessibility and the superb picture quality with its instantaneous screen refresh rate makes my old Mac seem quaintly redundant.

It's 49,000 baht including the keyboard ( a fine piece of modern design in itself ) which is steep but I am pretty much hooked and will spring for it I reckon.

What does the membership think? It has 128 gigabit capacity which is fin for my needs, I have only used 65 gigabit things of my old Mac's 128 capacity.

    Anyone bought it already?

Yes. I have one and am very happy with it. No problems at all.

If you have only used 65 gigs of drive space after 7 years, then 128 gb is more than enough for you. If you fancy it, buy it.

49k seems well steep but i guess you're paying for Apple.

Being s poor TEFLer I just bought an all-in-one that does everything I need for 15k.

It is all branding and Apple is the worst company, restricting the user to proprietary charging ports and software. I am an under-hood/bonnet tinkerer who builds his own PC's, I do not want some company to control what I do.

This stuff is another world to me.

I have just quite literally spent 3 minutes trying to turn a computer on. Eventually, I gave up and moved elsewhere.

    Here we go again.

Those of us who don’t have any interest in what goes on under the hood like Apple. I have used all kinds of products and prefer Apple for the simplicity. That’s it.

For the first time I also own an iPhone. It is a bit of overkill since I use a phone only when I leave the house. I could use a cheap phone and be happy.

AND my brother gave me an Apple Watch for my birthday. I can answer phone calls on that. (Though I feel right stupid talking to my watch in public.)

Took a look on the Thai Apple website, thought I found it 10k cheaper, until added the 10k keyboard.

1.5k for the charger cable, 5k for a case, still, having it engraved with 'Fok Fok Fok' was free, so umm, apples and oranges.

They don't half like charging for extra bits n DrB0bs eh.

    s.a.

The letter E tile on the keyboard jammed
well what do you expect after, in your totally over the top exasperation, pique and fury, hammering out the word brExit half a million times.
    surprised it lasted this long.

but at least in purchasing a new i-thing you will be supporting the shareholders of apple and the many thousands of children and uighurs labouring away for slave wages on the production lines.

Since iOS holds such a small share of the market, I pronounce you Linux and Windows users sheeple! So there!

My question, Seeking, is what do you use a computer for?

If it's just web browsing and downloading porn, why not get a tablet?

I got one of these and it's what I do everything on outside of "teaching".

The reviewer is pretty hot but don't let that distract you....

I fooking love the thing, it's the best piece of tech I've bought. Get a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and you can use it just like a laptop.

Isn't that pretty much what he's doing?

Personally, I can't do small displays and touchy thingies, plus the kid took my tablet a year ago and I'm too afraid to ask for it back.

Have you ever tried typing a word document without a mouse? Also, to be honest, it's what I'm used to. Can you use a mouse with an Apple phone or tablet?

    Wife says the same thing
It's just what you are used to. I can type docs without them fine.

Yes, you can use a mouse with an iPhone or iPad but I have no reason to. I just touch the screen.

I found it incredibly difficult to accurately place the cursor where I needed it by finger. Eye/hand coordination issues I guess.

7 years is as much as you can ask for a laptop computer. Since 2007, all of my laptops have lasted 4 years. The current Acer is holding the record at around 5 years but I fully expect it to keel over and die any day now.
