I found it interesting that he got an hour out of the UPS using it to power his router. I think the wife is going to let me buy one for the same reason eventually, but right now I need to get a laptop first. My old laptop has gone to laptop heaven I'm afraid.

Sure do. Its not some type of magic, it's just a matter of knowing the wattage being drawn by whatever devices are connected, knowing how long you want to be able to run them before the UPS runs out of internal power, then selecting the right wattage. There's online calculators for doing this but you could buy a home UPS that'd keep a computer powered for long enough to do a correct shutdown, or with enough capacity to keep it powered up for a full day.

I modded my UPS that my 3D printer is on by adding large external batteries, keeps the printer running for 8 hours.... been caught out too many times the dumbfucks dicking with the electric and shutting down.... they only seem to do it when Iam in the deep end of a 100hr print job.

I have to level with you all, I added a second battery to this one, From the old UPS (same brand) that died after 5 years, So you may only get a half hour of WiFi. Ive had this one for around six months, works great, The main reason is that in my area we get often short power cuts, Some for a few seconds some for a few minutes, The UPS is great for them with the TV and router, it keeps the 55 inch TV and wifi running continuous for about up to 15-20 minutes.
The one I got is a 1000VA. They are pretty cheap.

Yeah I used it to remove tar from the sides of my car, it has nothing to do with the printer.

Ah, I was wondering what you were printing for eight hours . . . (and missed where you wrote 3D)

15-20 mins is what you should shoot for in an UPS. 5 years seems to be pretty good if you are using it regularly. Where do you live that you get so many power cuts? How long do they typically last?

    Thailand.

    Atleast once a day.

5 to 10 minutes, or 5 to 10 hours depends on how big the bang was when the transformer exploded.

    It’s 3-4 times a week here - 7km from centre of CM.

It’s rare for them to last longer than 40 minutes these days.

Still, I no longer keep the Beluga in the fridge.

Well now, As of yesterday the fucking thing didn't work. Had a longer than 5 minutes power cut yesterday, it died within about 3 seconds, tested the extra battery and it showed 12.1 v, so turned it off and went outside to do some work. Then today had a powercut of about 20 seconds, fucking thing did it again, TV and router off, in about 3 seconds. fucking thing has only lasted around 3-4 months.
