Working From Home - Tips From the Pros...and TD Members

I've been working online now for just over a year, so I would like to think I've learned a thing or six.

    My set up priorities are:

    1. Stable internet connection
    2. Stable backup internet connection
    3. Decent camera?????? Decent computer???????

    Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

    3. A very good chair. As I don't work in an air conditioned office, instead of a gaming chair, I got a mesh backed "executive" chair similar to this one for about $200USD.

Working From Home - Tips From the Pros...and TD Members-chair-jpg

    It's changed my life.......

    4. Decent noise cancelling headset

    My set up....

Working From Home - Tips From the Pros...and TD Members-setup-jpg

    CPU - Dell i3-7gen, 4gb, 1tb drive
    Monitor - 24" Samsung (It's honestly a bit big)
    Camera - Logitech C310 (720P)
Headset - Logitech H390 (very nice noise cancelling mic, my wife can watch tv while I'm teaching)
Tablet - Samsung 10.1 - I use this to keep my copy of the textbooks on, with my teaching notes.

Upgrades - I want to ditch the headset and get a nice microphone, but nice microphones are fooking expensive and to be honest don't know enough about setting up a mic with monitors.

I'm also thinking of getting a 1080P camera but I'm concerned that the higher the resolution, the higher the bandwidth needed to send/receive it and at times that's an issue with myself and my students.

    What's your setup?

I don't work but I have the exact "executive" chair as pictured. Was quite surprised to find a quality chair in Nan city.

My set up is main, double screen desktop, two laptops on a creaky desk.

I used a normal chair for a while, then ordered a desk chair from Ikea. I f*cking HATE the thing.

A good chair is essential, and I will replace mine when I can get out to try one. Not going to make the mistake of buying on line again.

Same same. This one bought a few years ago second hand, paid a couple of thousand baht from recollection. One thing about Phuket, and I guess other places here, always people leaving/businesses closing so a very active secondhand market. At the moment particularly, some real bargains to be had.

Same here, tons of chairs from closed businesses, I bought one earlier in the year and I named it Squeaky. If I wiggled a toe, it squeaked loud enough my students could hear it.

Neither to be honest. My loving wife makes me a cup in the morning and we usually get an afternoon coffee from the shop downstairs that quite honestly is overpriced shite.

This is what I am looking at when I usually post here...

Working From Home - Tips From the Pros...and TD Members-x8iubrh-jpg

PC - Built by me, I7 8700k cooled by a Noctua NH-D15, 32gb GSkill high speed DDR4 RAM running at 3600hz, MSI 1080TI gaming GPU with a custom Raijintek Morpheus GPU cooler
Monitors - 32" LG 1440p primary monitor with a 144hz refresh rate, LG 24" secondary monitor
    Headphone - Sennheiser HD 580
Microphone - is on a boom, and you can see the silhouette in the photo is a Sure SM7B
    Camera - Logitech C922 Pro
Chair - Herman Miller (it is worth every penny trust me)

I also have an expensive mouse and a mechanical keyboard as well as a 5.1 Logitech speaker system. Cutting back on peripherals is just not worth it imho. I am planning to upgrade soon to an AMD Zen 3 processor, motherboard and a new Nvidia 3080 TI GPU when they are released. Then I should be good until the upcoming release of DDR5 PC memory.

Normal work laptop and mic. Nice and comfy chair. I was sat on the floor the first time we went WFH and it damn near killed me. The desk can adjust height so sometimes I'll stand up like I work in that trendy London or something.

Saw an advert for screens that attach to a laptop screen which would be handy but a bit expensive..

I have been working remotely now for just over a year. I do not teach so all my calls are audio, never video (Thank God!!!). I keep my set up pretty simple and effective and quite mobile. I can pack up and do my con calls from virtually anywhere and have.

    I have 2 laptops,

    1. Dell XPS 1730 with upgraded RAM and Graphics Card. I use with the Samsung 24" monitor. Primarily personal use
    2. Dell Latitude 7380 Laptop. I use a BT Jabra 510 microphone/speaker. This is work only. I can move this anywhere. I sometimes move my office down to the pool bar area for long AOP or QBR type reviews as it is far more refreshing and I use my JBL BT speaker system there so I can hear the call while doing other things.
    3. I have outstanding fiber internet and Wifi so I can do all calls from anywhere at the compound. If I go mobile, I tether off my Samsung S20 and amazingly my service here in Thailand is extremely good anywhere I go. I have done a few con calls sitting on a beach at Koh Chang without an issue.

At the home office I have a Serta office chair that is super comfortable with a manual lumbar support and a nice Teak desk I had a friend make for me.

Only JP's desk on here so far and maybe Pag's, look secure and tasteful enough to rodger any self respecting secretary/maid.

The rest are just in reality seedy wank stations, with the biggest part of the budget spent on a good door locking mechanism or beer fridge

    Not looking forward to Simon43's

These Dyson one's are good, great range of variable speeds and quiet. Horrendously expensive though. M'Sahib has this on her sewing table.

I've got a big fan I use when not in calls and then just slowly sweat to death when on a call. It's a steel roof as well so if it rains I'm fucked by the noise

If its kinda yours and permanent, why don't you upgrade with insulation, it'll cut down the noise and heat?

    Won't cost a lot

No, but similar theme I guess. These are unsigned original oils. When I got them, 14 years ago, for me they depicted windows, with hot and cold, day and night outside.
