I have just bought a second hand HP laptop with i3 for my daughter for school next year. I did get a 500GB SSD fitted and it seems to be ample for school work. I am not a gamer but we have a gaming PC at home.

Give it another 8GB RAM and it will likely be fine, 8GB is the absolute minimum for WIN10

My indispensable tablet is the Yoga Tab 3 Plus, but I think they rebranded it as Smart Tab.

Massive battery life, brilliant 10" screen, 802.11ac Wifi, takes a MicroSD card and does everything you need.

I have a 12" Samsung in the kitchen for videos and TV, but that never moves so it's connected to my LAN.

Multiple tabs of the Browser open, multiple programs simultaneously running are OK, but photos do take a while to open.

'how many browsers are you running' 20, maybe 25 ... only for short time.

I'll open up a folder of stocks and looking at yields/charts.

    Mozilla/Firefox

... and yes, I'd like 8 gig of RAM ... would love 16 gig.

Probably looking to upgrade this computer next year as it's almost 5 years old.

If you're only browsing and the odd bit of document writing, the best way to get better performance out of an old PC is to put Linux on it.

FWIW I ended up getting a nice little lightweight HP with all the specs I asked for apart from a halving from 512 to 256 for about 500 quid. Suits me fine and it'll take me an age to fill that capacity anyway.

After all these years of tech, it still doesn't do properly cheap computers for us non-geeks, does it? Five hundred quid to listen to music and piss about on forums still grates and I'd much rather have spent the extra on something actually enjoyable like a flight to Ouagadougou or somewhere.
