    Core i5 processor

In the market for a new laptop and I've been told to get one with a Core i5 processor (or ryzen5) because this is best for Windows 10.

The thing is that I only use my personal laptop for listening to music and pissing about on the Internet.

The person who gave me this advice knows his stuff, but I'm not sure he realises just what a luddite I am, so I'm wondering if there is anyway of saving a few bob here and getting, say, I3 or do I just have to bite the bullet?

I would doubt that because the i5 is far from the best. It is an old chipset and there are many better options...

Remember you want to future proof a new PC build because even though you may think that you just poke around you may get screwed because tech moves fast. Do not be a cheapskate.

A core i5 cpu is optimal for a laptop that you will not use for any heavy computing, more powerful cpu's draws more power (battery) and are more expensive. Your friend gave you a good advice.

Cheers both. i5 it is then.

Snubs, I don't need anything great. Just something decent for my basic needs that will serve me well for a while.

I'll pay the extra 100 quid or whatever for the i5.

Incorrect. Newer processers are more energy efficient. The i5 is a fossil.

i5 was made between January 2010 to April 2018, the i7 between September 2009 to April 2018.

For a gamer like you but not for hal, he doesn't need any more powerful cpu than the i5.
Look at battery life in the comparison I linked to..

First let me say that , I know little about these things so please take everything I have to say on this subject in that context.
I Have an Acer Aspire with an I3 7th generation, running Win 10 I don't really know how it relates to an I5 , but I also use my lop top in the same manner the OP describes.
I also have an 10" fire tablet that I purchased to read kindle books.
Wife has the latest I Pad, that we purchased on sale last month for about $300.
In the beginning the lop top was fast, very fast, now it is slowing down, and takes for ever to start up. Every time I turn it off I am afraid that when I need to start it up there will be a Win10 update and I will have to wait for ever,

Consequently, I find myself using the Fire tablet to surf the web more and more. Only problem with the Fire tablet is that it will not run the Chrome browser and I wave to use the one already installed in the fire tablet. I had seen a vid on how to hack the system and install Chrome, but as I said I don't know much about these things and I an afraid to do it.

This is the second I pad for the wife, she had the other on for over five years , still works fine, but she felt it was getting old. She never had a problem.
There were other tablets out there when we were looking, Samsung had a nice one , and probably better than the I pad, but we got the I pad for her because she was already familiar with it.

The point of this long story is, If you are using the device to only "listening to music and pissing about on the Internet. " you might want to consider a tablet. If you dont like the touch typing, you can always get a case for it with a keyboard.
When this lop top gives up the ghost or becomes too much of a problem (almost there) I am getting a tablet.

    Just food for thought.

I had a Samsung tablet before, but I was never comfortable with it and I had trouble with the browsers. Still, for my needs, it would probably make more sense. I have a work laptop anyway so can use that for any more important stuff.

I'm with snubby. If you are buying a new computer, get the best spec within your budget. It will last longer.

*Added: Or make sure the processor is upgradeable. And get as much RAM as you can. Windows loves RAM.

    I''m the opposite....

Get a Samsung (Android) tablet. It works great for basic stuff for tons of basic tasks.

Right now, I'm typing this post on a Samsung tablet, with a usb keyboard and mouse connected...something you can't do on an ipad.

Tablets are portable, have tons of storage and can connect to the internet from either a wifi spot in Chiang Rai or BKK.

Anymore, I only use our computer to download shows, news, TD or facebook is all done on my tablet.

I didn't like the last one I had though and that was Samsung. You can't put a flash drive in a tablet either, can you?

I like this simple, sufficient chart from Dell that breaks the processor needs down pretty well. Access Denied

Same story on my ASUS with an i3. The battery is knackered too, so looking at replacement options.

This can always be a hard choice between true use intentions and ones personal budget. I am with Snubs and HB. Get the most you can within your budget but do not go light on the RAM, especially with Windows 10 and app usage. I have an older Dell with an I5 with 8gb RAM, works fine but I really only use it for Downloading content. Its been a good computer but with Windows 10 its a bit slow.

The other Laptop I use is a Dell touchscreen with the i7 and 16gb RAM. I use it for picture and video editing, streaming sports. Very fast, works great and I have it set up with a 32" external monitor and external speakers. That is my workhorse comp.

This really is the sweet spot and by going this route one will assure that their PC will be future proof for sometime to come.
