    Kindle - - using non-Amazon books

I've 'inherited' my youngest daughter's Kindle, which is very kind of her as I do love to read but I've always disliked the notion of not having a book in hand.

So, I tried it out with some purchased books - it's actually quite good.

Now, Amazon allows some off-site content providers like Gutenberg but I can't seem to load or transfer files from my laptop to it to read.

    How do I either:

    * download non-Amazon books on the Kindle

    * transfer files (mobi, epub and convert to mobi) from my laptop to the Kindle

Yes, I've googled but can't get a workable solution . . . and I don't really know how the Kindle works, in terms of creating folders, deleting stuff, connecting to the internet etc...

    IT - not too bad

    Kindle - suck

    Thanks

Cant help you there because both the systems I get books come via Amazon but I dont pay for both though I might have to pay for kindle unlimited once they get wise to me, but it is only $9.99. a month. Trust me it is worth it, I read hundreds of books. (retired and nothing better to do)
Sign up for a free, one month Kindle unlimited, then cancel, then do it again. I have done it twice so far. From Thailand you will need a VPN.
if you have a US address , next time you are there get a library card, Most locations have many of their books on line available for kindle. The system for my local library is called NEFLIN, once I borrow a book it redirects me to Amazon , and I download it from there. I guess Neflin must have some kind of agreement with Amazon.
Anyway even though I know that's not what you are asking for, I hope this helped you a little.
I will follow this thread , perhaps I can learn something new also.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

...I go to Amazon...I order the books I want...I read on one device...simple. SD downloads his books onto 3 or 4 devices and reads from whichever is nearest to hand...what could be more convenient?...

    Hey Hat,

    It's super easy.

Let me screenshot some later this evevning.

Essentially, you use a cord to connect the cable, drop pdf or mobi files into the documents folder.

If you have epub or other files, you can convert using a free programme called Calibre.

I can relate. I suggest you buy a leather cover. It transformed the reading experience for me. May work for you too.

I recommend calibre too. It organizes books you have on your computer and transforms formats. Only for non copy protected files. There are tools out there to crack copy protection but I never used them. Calibre exports directly to Kindle. But without it you can just dump the file into the Kindle like into any other USB storage device. Kindle finds it.

It will take any USB 2.0 A-Male to Micro B data cable and when you plug it in to a Windows PC, will appear as a storage device.

As Topper says, you can do any conversions *** with an app called Calibre.

And then you go here (or any other torrent site really) and download books and magazines.

Thanks, I might try that. Thing is that I also like quite old books, in German or French as well, and Kindle doesn't have many. Gutenberg does but access is limited. I recently found an old document about early German colonisation in Samoa, the why, how and to what end but couldn't read it.

Thanks, TC - like you I relish old things (no, my wife is younger than I am) and they're tough to find

And when I do that Kindle informs me to stop charging the unit and disconnect the cable.

when you plug it in you usually get asked on the kindle if you want to charge it or use it as a storage device.... just ignore and he computer will/should/does for me find it. Then drop boooks or folders of books into that documents folder

the only problem is these non kindle bought books won’t show up on other synchronized kindle devices

And my Mac allows me to do similar. (not pictured today, since I spilled condensation on the keyboard)

    Try 'Library Genesis' - gen.lib.rus.ec

Amazing selection of scientific and fiction books, no pop-ups, really fantastic for anything older than a year or so.

Not every USB cable is a data cable. In fact you should carry a non-data cable with you any time you think you might want to plug into a charging station or whatever.

You should upload that apk to virustotal.com before you install it.

Putting malware into a plain simple battery charger which doesn't have any intelligence or place to store the malware.. Maybe works if you put on a tin-foil hat.

    Allow me, HArry.

Lom, pam. Juice Jacking is not a "plain simple charger". The charge point has been tampered with so that is has " intelligence or place to store the malware". What you think is a charging station is not. Sort of like the old days when rogues would install fake ATM machines; look like the real thing but is not.

    Get it?

While I'm glad you take an interest in the subject, not only can charging stations serve up malware, but even modified cables can do it.

The point of the video is to point out that there is nothing on the surface to tell you that skullduggery is afoot: It still charges.

    You silly arse.
