Thread: Paid antivirus

Need some recommendations please for paid antivirus. Its for a family of 5 so will need to protect Windows computers and phones. Thanks in advance.

They're all next to useless, so you might as well plump for a free one.

and regularly scan with the free versions of
ccleaner
and
malwarebytes

I use bitdefender free versionbecause it does everything in the background. I also use Free version of Glary utilities for general computer house cleaning and run malwarebytes. The free version of sandboxie works quite well if you are surfing it isolates the download. I found it quite useful. I use W7 so don't know about whats good forW10.

Apart from wasting your money, no.

I use 360 Total Security which is free and has multiple engines. It was the only one that picked up 0-day malware (ransomware) in spreadsheets of which we've been getting many waves at work recently (which were otherwise safely quarantined for having scripts in them).

There are so many new variants these days that signature-based antivirus is a crap shoot.

used Avast for years but found it has become too bloated... now using Avira

... That has been tested and uses Avira, Bitdefender and AVMII engines.

I've been using the free version of Avast for at least a decade and it has always done the job. Have to agree with Neo though, it has gotten bloated. Too many popups now too, trying to sell their pay version.

Still using it so far...may be time for a change.

I can't imagine why a "for profit" style of business would act in that manner.

Avira and AVG have served me well over the years. I like AVG because there's one package you can buy where you can protect everything from your phones phones to home computers at one price.

The Avast popups and bloat just started within the last 2 or 3 years...if I'm remembering correctly. Maybe it's been longer.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Kaspersky yet. Maybe it's the Trump effect.

what bothers me is that you seem able to get most security software free on torrent sites ..
can't they even protect their own products ?

Yesterday I strolled around the local IT Mall to get an idea of prices for a good Virus Killer. Only saw Kaspersky and BitDefender, didn't see any other names. Both only offered 1 year packages though.

Only had 4-5 shops selling them and one had a promotion by BitDefender. 1yr/1pc package for 599Baht. Buy 1 get 2 Free. I've only got the one pc so would do me for 3 years at 200B per year. Peanuts.

Are Free versions really Free? Or are they Free but............

They're free... the advantage to the provider is that it has a wider exposure to possible threats and so can provide better protection to its paid customers.

They're fighting a losing battle. There are 350,000+ new variants being released every day.
