I finally found an ad blocker that works and is easy to set up on an Android device.
Gets rid of the trollop adds on TD.

adblock plus is a kludge on an unrooted android and only seems to work on wifi as you route it all through an onboard proxy - I want to kill ads on my GSM connection because they cost me data allowance

They have a support forum for Adguard.
    VPN not filtering mobile data

I have discovered why the app was not filtering ads on mobile data in VPN mode. It seems to be a problem with IPv6, which my APN was set to by default. I changed it to IPv4 and it solved the problem.

I never figured out why I couldn't send MMS over WiFi in proxy mode, but it is irelevant now that VPN mode works. So you can consider this issue closed.

    Not true.

You just add the proxy to the APN.

Adguard seems to use localhost proxy too.
