    Ubuntu antivirus anyone?

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04, it's running on a partitioned 250gb ssd shared 50/50 with win7 and a secondary 1T partitioned drive for downloads and stuff. So far it's working very well with only a few minor problems not worth mentioning.
What I can't figure out is if it's still ok to run Linux without any antivirus protection and if scanning the win7 partition from Ubuntu can allow crossover of any naughtiness?
My thinking is it's unnecessary but I want to be sure before I start putting sensitive info into it.

I don't think any kind of crossover is possible. I use clamAV for Ubuntu.

I use a bootable disk with Avira on it and another one with Kaspersky on it. There are a few others around:

15 Free Bootable Antivirus Tools (Updated June 2015)

I have always preferred to run anti-virus from a separate bootable source just in case the OS has been infected and masking the virus.

This release is no longer supported. I would upgrade to at least 14.04LTS (Long Term Support). The auto update feature should be asking you if you want to upgrade by now...don't worry it isn't quite as painful as Windows can be.

^^^ which version...the one based on Ubuntu?

It would be nice if you could explain your reasons for such a statement.

Mind you in ten years plus he's never left his house except to play dungeons and dragons or the like.

Oh, and OP: CLAMAV is the one you want.

But better to look at your browser and addons like WOT.

In all those years there has only been one issue that I've read of -- didn't affect me, but for those it did there was a free fix within hours. This is the beauty of open source software - no proprietary hurdles to overcome.
