Set up your own website for FREE

I was surprised at this. You don't get MUCH for free
    https://www.yola.com/

But for a little over $4.00 a month you do get a LOT.

    https://www.yola.com/pricing

    Any opinions.

I have no real need but I will definitely open a free one.

Don't know about that one but I have a winx site which I found to be good. Started with the free and upgraded to pro. I like the ease of use. I have a Joomla too which I prefer in some ways, but it isn't free of course.

Ad-free and free (as in free beer and legal free use)

Preamble: all this is easier and more secure if you have a spare, old, low-spec PC that you don't use (or use for very little). It is also easier in the long run to do on a Linux (or Unix) based machine but all the software has Win versions if you are so inclined. Set whatever computer you have decided to use as your webserver to have a fixed local IP address (ie no DHCP from your router) and tell the router to send all incoming http requests to that machine

    1) Go to no-ip.com and get a free hostname & their free dynamic DNS service if your net connection doesn't have a fixed IP address (this is almost everybody using a domestic 'net package even if you are in an office). It'll be in the form of goatpr0n.aaaaa.bbb where goatpr0n is whatever you choose, .aaaaa and .bbb are the free bits that you don't exactly get to choose but there are quite a lot of options available. ( buttsecs.bounceme.net was popular at one time )
The only requirement is that you log in every 30 days to let them know you are still around and you can have up to 5 free sites at any one time. Fed up with one? Just delete it and create a new one in about 5 minutes.

    2) Download and install some web server software (Apache is the most popular and there is scadloads of help available all over google if you get stuck), but there are others. Pay attention to keeping it up to date with security patches and read carefully before you start allowing php and stuff, especially if your server is not a dedicated machine.

    3) Google for 'free web template' or somesuch, download a few and use a text editor to muck around with them until you've got it looking how you want. If you are feeling adventurous you can also get free (as in beer and use) scripts, programs etc for just about anything from chatrooms to shopping carts to galleries.

    4) Some ISPs will bitch if you try to run a webserver out of your domestic net package (they'll tell you it's only available for business package customers yada yada yada). Tell them you've bought an IP security cam and you want to monitor it remotely from your phone, since these devices are webservers in their own right the ISP will hopefully open up port 80 for you; even if they won't you can set your webserver software to listen to whatever port the ISP opens for you and tell no-ip to redirect any incoming web requests to that port instead.

    5) Test if your port is actually open by going to Open Port Check Tool , you can test other ports there too.

    6) Move all your goatpr0n files to whatever folder you told Apache to find them in and bingo: Your own free home on the web! With Apache you can have password protected areas for family, throttle online pests and anything else any other website can do. You can also right-click-save-as to post pics to TD without having to make a blood offering to the gods of the Gallery from Hell™ or photobucket, but I am told this can lead to mischief.

    7) More stuff: noip.com also allow mx records with their free stuff so you can set up your own email server if you want to be koojo@koojo.noip.me

PS: Butterfly and Rural 'Fuck off Jeff' Surin both desperately want to be mods so if you are setting up a forum you'd probably better get ready for even more interminable whining than usual from them!

What should I be paying for 3 fairly straightforward mainly informational business websites?
Should I have them done at home (Australia)? Or does it make no diff?
Is it easy enough to change pics and wording in-house without me having to go back to the professional?
How do I ensure my ownership of sites and content?

As you will realise I am not too tech savvy any answers would be appreciated.

By owning the domain name(s) (for example: www.iceman123.com) and writing the content yourself. Buy a domain (as many as you need), get some hosting, throw up your websites.

This Australian website gives the following costs:

Domain name: AUD 9.90 a year
Hosting: from AUD 4.90 a month.

Do not let the people who make your content be the same ones who register your website (and vice-versa).

Sign up for an account at a good domain registrar (Namecheap.com is my favourite, I've used GoDaddy but their website is a fucking pain to navigate and they are naughty about adding things to the bill if you don't watch what you are doing).

Pay them to register your domain (iceman123.com for example) and keep the account details to yourself. Prices vary depending on what is after the 'dot', dot coms are usually about 11US$ a year or so.

Ownership of content is a different story since anybody can right-click, save as.. on a website and nab whatever they want. If you mean ownership of the ability to change your website then pay for a place to host it (those start at about 1US$ a month at somewhere like 3iX.org), upload the files that your webpage people have made for you and then you retain the ability to edit and tweak the site as you like or change pics etc. You can also go and get a complete re-design somewhere else and then simply overwrite the existing site with your new one if you wish.

    My first attempt.

I fucked up the address. It'll never get any hits except from bad spellers.

Nice. I think website builders are cheap in general and lots of them are really useful for beginners or those who have no idea about coding. I used Yola before but I switched to the hPage Website Builder now since I feel like their websites are more SEO optimized there. Check them out: https://www.hpage.com

Why? I mean, if you're a total beginner or non techie person, website builders have everything laid out for you.

Website design is taught in school these days. How many simultaneous users can be connected to a basic site your advertising? 2-3?
