    Crappy new laptop

I've just been "given" a brand new Acer laptop from my company. It's to deal with queries, work related matters etc from home. The internet browser is IE (I use Firefox on my work PC) and it has loads of apps etc already installed as standard - virtually none of which I need. It's Windows 8 btw

OK, only had it about 3 weeks and used it about 20 times in that time. Only for eBay and email - nothing else! Honest. It was very slow when I first got it and now, it's dreadful. It also now runs into problems on IE ( I can only get into eBay through my emails, if I try any other way IE crashes). It is virus protected.

Will deleting all the crap (apps etc) I don't use help? Would being on Firefox be any better? Any other reasons (including my total incompetence - if solutions can be given, pls) why something that is brand new is responding worse than my old laptop on crappy dial up in Thailand did or suggestions would be gratefully received.

you could try switching them all off first and see, as many may be set up to start themselves running , when you start the computer up .

click , window start search box - then type msconfig , and then click the msconfig.exe that pops up.

    A new box opens
    select ''start up ''
untick the programs you don't want to auto start.
    click '' ok''
    then restart the laptop.

just take it back and ask for one that works out of the box.
it could be anything slowing it down , why should you spend hours finding what wrong with it .

Was it a genuine copy of windows or a copy.??

I brought a new desktop last month as my 7 year old Acer Laptop was on its last legs.I spent the whole day clearing out all the unwanted junk and malware as it was just a copy windows OS .
A few days later when passing the shop I popped in to buy a few bits and told him the copies he was installing into new computers have malware, browser hijackers and virus's but he didn't seem all that bothered and said " No problem" !!

Wish I could. My company would kill me! This is the second brand new laptop I've had that has been a pile of shite from them. The first was a Dell & it was found that the hard drive hadn't been installed properly. It took 5 months to sort - they "fixed" it (Dell) but it was no different & they eventually refunded the company who bought this one which is just as bad. I haven't told the company yet. I was hoping I wouldn't need to

No idea. Considering who actually bought it, could easily be a copy

Here's a handy tool to identify bloatware if you're not so clued up:

    Should I Remove It?

Identify and alert the problems earlier, rather than later.

That way you can avoid the blame.

% is % of ppl who remove it. Your choice. It also has a link on each to an explanation of what the app is. Saves Googling each one if you're not so up to date on all the crap. Quick and useful on new pc's especially, they get loaded with tons of bloatware/crapware these days.

O.K., now I understand. Its on a case by case basis and it reflects the percentages who felt it was or was not of any value...How does one determine that the bloatware is actually bloatware and not attached to the execution of other needed bloatware? In the link I suppose it lets one know? I'm going back to your post and check it out again before I choose to download or not.

Thanks FlyFree...all good info for me.
