    M$ have turned into Apple

I bought the oldest lad a new laptop. It came 'pre-installed' with Linpus Linux, but it basically only to give boot options.

Now that manufacturers are embracing UEFI instead of good old fashioned BIOS it means M$ can lock users in to using Win 8. Wankers.

So, instead of simply putting a working version of Win 7 on it, I have to fuck about DLing the right version of Win 8 (RTM) and then crack it using a KMS Activator (which the lad being a dickhead will undoubtedly delete or allow the anti-virus software to kill it 5 mins after getting his hands on it).

I'm not paying over 5k for a kosher version.

I did on a friends laptop. He despised Windows 8 and so I rolled him back to 7. I would just stay away from UEFI products.

No - Acer have set it so it cannot be changed to legacy mode.

I tried (a dozen different ways). the Win 7 install just hangs as soon as the start-up screen starts to load.

The university just gave me a Lenovo think pad, the value I think is about 20,000 baht. It came with windows 7, and after a month I took it to the uni computer shop and they entered the key information to make it real. Very happy indeed with it. Mostly 6+ hours battery life. Mine was made last year. Wonder why the one you bought is so different. Cheers.

I bought a cheap laptop for my oldest lad. If it was for me, I would've spent more.

I wouldn't buy a Mac as there are too many compatibility issues with the main things I need it for.

I remember FORTRAN 66 and punch cards, if we are really going to talk about the Dark Ages. I was born the same year as Steve Jobs but didn't want to spend my life programming computers, which I figured any fool could do, so I quit Computer Science after the first year and studied Economics instead. Slaps head.
