Came across this project run by some Jap uni. Interesting idea that I have not come across so far. I really am not up to date with tech stuff anymore so it may not be new.

Basically a free distributed-server vpn network thingymabob on the lines of p2p.

Looks fukkin shaky and rat-infested at the moment and not sure the late-teen nearsighted Jap students will get it right, but I like the concept.

VPN isn't new but unless you are a business that can absorb the cost they are prohibitively expensive. As VPN works via tier two services and generally bypass consumer level ISP's it is not for home use, rather a cheaper commercial option.

As legislation increases government control over the internet, proxy and vpn packages will become a more commonly used route for internet users, however they will also be a useful tool for nefarious access to your data, so choose wisely.

Just had a look at that, seems solid and a good price.

Low cost vpn has been around a long time.

Found the idea of distributed servers interesting. Saw Tor being mentioned from time to time but never really tried to find out what it's about. So thats been around for a while.

Whats good about HsS that you rec it that people like Astrill, Strong and HMAss dont offer?

The trouble with Tor and VPN Gate is that the servers are distributed around the world, so the performance is usually abysmal.

Things like Hotspot shield actually have servers in the US, so it's much faster.

I just use the free version and turn it on and off on demand. It does load an ad page or two but they aren't particularly intrusive.

openVPN is free

you need to know how to install both client and server , generate certs , DH keys etc ( all of which is straightforward if you can follow instructions ) .

I used to use tomatoVPN firmware on wrt54gl's to create site to site VPN tunnels and it worked quite well.

now I have rented a VPS with a bulgarian host and run an openVPN server on it and I have a 54gl in my room which connects to it as a client

I connect to the 54gl via wifi with my laptop , phone and other peripherals and all traffic is routed though the tunnel and exits via the server in bulgaria.

this allows me to use all the software I wish , transparently , from behind a corporate network.

as long as I do not be a dickhead and start causing problems with a large amount of encrypted traffic encroaching on the other users of the network , the admins are unlikely to even notice.

if they are managing your openVPN server - yes then you have to pay

but openVPN software - server and client is free - and you will need to manage it and host it yourself

AFAIK OpenVPN the software/protocol is free, open source? Must be server charges?

I use HideMyNet who charge $3.50 a month. Configured their server details in DD-WRT and anything I attach to that router comes out in the States, although that price is for one device.

Haven't used them in a while so things may have changed but for free vpn they weren't too bad:

Used HTTP Tunnel for a long time, free for low usage, small fee for faster server

CyberGhost has a free OpenVPN service as well. Not as ad-free as SecurityKiss but by far not as intrusive as HsShield.

Seems fine. Shows a couple ads on connection, then according to them some ads every 2 hours. 6 hour disconnect, can reconnect.

All free services are slower. This one seems fine.

There's also a free proxy.

Actually Hotspot Shield seem to have changed things within the last couple of months; it used to pop up a new page for every site, with a delay, but now it just seems to do it at startup and shutdown.

And as is the way, I had to load Hotspot Shield to download Cyberghost, because our "ICT" ministry blocks the site!
