    Buying WIN 7

    Hi

After deciding that I don't want to switch to WIN 8 I now want to install WIN 7 on all our computers.

It seems DELL has purchased a lot of WIN 7 licenses and is now dumping them on the european market.

I bought 2 licenses WIN 7 professional 64bit with multi language install DVD and license sticker for 30€ each, a good deal I think. The official version still sells for more than 80€.

It supports many european languages but only Japanese as a non european language. That is fine for me.

Microsoft does not like it but it is legal under EU rules to use those company licenses so they accept it. Simple online activation does not work though and I have to go the telephone activation route that is a little awkward but works. It is really little hassle for a legal WIN 7 at that price. I don't want to use pirated copies here in europe - and elsehwere because there is no risk with automatic updates with a legal copy.

Windows 8 is Windows 7, but with an extra interface. I can flick through them both.
Its pretty slick after the small learning curve

is that with a DELL machine or without a DELL machine ? a branded OEM version installed on non-branded PC is illegal, period. You need to use a generic OEM to be installed on an "assembled" PC to be legal. If you don't fit those requirements, you are in license violation and could be fined by BSA. Highly unlikely, but if you are a business, it's still a possibility.

not even sure what has pirated copies anything to do with risk in automatic update ??? maybe you meant something else.

what a strange question actually. What is prompting you in the first place to switch to Win7 ? if that alone is not clear, then maybe you don't need to switch. Are you expecting live technical support from MS ? if no, then why ? the new mac-like interface maybe ? again, the average PC users seem to want to upgrade automatically without asking question why, like they were conditioned by marketing to do so.

Babbling again about things you don't know off, as usual.

It is legal under EU-regulation, wether Microsoft likes it or not. And wether you know it or not.

priceless, legal under EU regulation, wtf !!! you are in direct violation of their License agreement which is a contract between you and MS, not you and the EU. Software is not a regulated industry, they pretty much get away with anything (except privacy and competition)

as usual, PC amateurs like you have no clue, but that's hardly surprising. In short, your copy of Win7 is not legal because it doesn't follow the purpose of your license agreement. In your case, you need a Retail version, not OEM, and that's a different price, for good reasons.

One would think that even you know that states or in this case the EU sets rules what can be legally part of a contract. Binding the OS to hardware is illegal in the EU and therefore MS can write what they want into their license. It may be valid elsewhere but is not in the EU and Microsoft recognizes it.

For a while they tried to get around it by not delivering an install DVD but only a recovery version that allowed to reset the PC to the state it was delivered in but they don't do that anymore.

Well, to be fair to butterfly, he did walk me thru a pesky problem I had with MS Outlook a while back. He was actually the only one who exhibited any interest in my problem so there's that.

Strangely enough, that's the question Begbie asked me too.

another gem, confusing manufacturers practices with MS licensing

like I said, you should be worry about those legal copies, buying them is the easy part, it's getting the correct ones that can be challenging for amateurs like you. As long as you don't install them in an office with employees, you should be fine, the BSA is not coming to your home.
