Can I ask when you are sending someone around to have dinner, because I dont know about you, BUT I LIKE TO BE WINED & DINED WHEN I GET FUCKED!

The iPad Mini is a smart gadget – but Apple's overhyped launches are beginning to bore the pants off us

And here it is!

Apple events now feel like being stuck next to the most boastful bore at the dinner party and discovering he’s brought his holiday photos, children’s school reports and a brochure for the timeshare scheme he’s bought into.

And thanks to the Apple rumour sites, you’ve already had hundreds of postcards telling you everything you need to know already.

For months we’ve been told to expect the iPad mini today and that’s what arrived. The surprise was that an update to the iPad came along for the ride.

If you’ve got the third generation iPad, launched as “the new iPad” in March, it’s suddenly old.

Most gallingly, Apple’s senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, actually joked about how quickly your expensive pride and joy becomes yesterday’s news earlier in the event announcing a raft of updates to the company’s MacBook and iMac lines: “Isn’t it incredible how a new thing makes the old design look instantly old?”

No, Phil, it’s been your business model for years and it’s that speedy obsolescence that’s getting old.

During over an hour of self-aggrandising slides and shiny new ads, Apple further strengthened its obsession with making its products smaller and lighter.

This company has an obsession with thinness that would make Anna Wintour blush but its nerdy focus on new production methods like “plasma deposition” and “friction stir welding” is bewildering. The avalanche of superlatives and backslapping is alienating to watch.


That Apple chose to allow everyone to watch via a live web stream rather than just invited guests at its San Jose event and a satellite location in London is interesting.

It’s the first time since 2010 that the company has decided to do so and suggests that it wanted to ensure it had even tighter control on the message it was putting out with the iPad Mini launch.

With an Apple broadcast in play, the constellation of live blogs desperately pecked out by tech sites become a lot less interesting.
Those who tuned in to that live video from Apple saw the CEO, Tim Cook, handling the figures and background, crowing about 100 million iPad sales and handing over to Phil Schiller to unveil new products.

Cook is a canny operator and a worthy successor to Steve Jobs but he lacks the charisma to make words like “legendary” seem convincing rather than painfully hyperbolic.

The iPad Mini is exactly what we’d been led to expect it would be – a version touted for its thinness (it’s 7.22mm thick or “as thin as pencil!” as Schiller excitedly declared) and lightness (0.68 lbs). Trailed with talk about the education market, it’s clear that the iPad mini is designed to appeal children as much as adults.

In a smart move, it shares the same resolution as the iPad 2, which remains part of the product line. That means apps designed to run on the older model will automatically work on the iPad mini.
Apple will sell huge numbers of the iPad Mini and the refreshed iPad.

In turn, those sales will help to push its updated Mac lines. One part of this sales pitch just isn’t working so well any more, though, and that’s the launch events. Without the charismatic presence of Steve Jobs and new products that justify the hype, these tech jamborees feel played out.

How many times can we be told that that what was the future six months ago is now boring and be expected to enjoy it?
