    What external HD?

The reason I ask is because I am on my second 500gb Seagate in just over a year. Both developed the same problem which is the USB connection seems to work it's way lose from its internal connections, despite being gentle with it.

All I use it for it storing TV programs and movies and the odd file or two.

I saw a buffalo but my wife seems to think they are shit. She knows more than me about computers which is why I bought the Seagate in the first place!

    Thanks

Yes - USB connection, connectors and adapters can be a real head-fuck. In, out - In, out all bluddy day long.

What helps (I find, at least) is to buy a USB extension cable (possibly 2), such that you're only attaching/removing the USB extension socket heads all day long. Saves wear and tear on the built-in USB sockets, as you only need to insert the extension(s) ONCE.

My last USB extension cost 50 baht - and that was about 18 months ago. No probs since and should there be a prob, then it's easy to buy a new replacement extension.

    Tadaaaa!
I've learned that pleasing everyone is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Got a 1tb bufalo, works fine, use extenstensions for usb cables though, cheap to throw away.

Also got a USB to IDE SATA cable that does everything, not tried it yet though.

    Good idea.

I have a 2 TB Western Digital Drive but don't plug and unplug at all. Use for PC backup.

    So far all ok.

Take a look here JJ. Must be something fits your needs.

i also do that, and keep a couple of extensions hanging out of the computer as well.

these days, failure of a 50baht peripheral can mean having to buy a new laptop or hard disc.

I have heard negative things about buffalo.

Honestly, after doing a lot of research on various external HDs I chose to buy the Western Digital 1 TB Passport.

I've only had it a few weeks or a month, but I'm very happy so far.

Western Digital is a top-seller or thee top-seller. The reviews are consistently good.

I paid about $105 USD for it.

Check out the reviews on the web on all of the sites. I'm very pleased (although admittedly, I haven't had it long). I am saving stuff for back up and also downloading and storing films/shows etc for future use.

    So,

    (pardon the ignorance)

It's better for me to buy a USB extension, plug it into my laptop USB socket and leave it there all the time? Then just plug my portable HD into the extension, to keep the laptop's USB socket from wearing out?

Please clarify/confirm (as I am ignorant as shite).

    Thanks.

Nobody uses that anyway. USB 3 is fast as. I use Toshiba after burning through a few WD after heavy use. Was advised not to buy buffaloe coz they're shite but can't speak from experience on that.

About being ignorant or about the USB plug?

Seriously, should I just keep the USB extension in all the time?

    I do.

They're not as convenient as USBs, but fine if they're permanently connected. I only use it to keep a USB port free for something else.

    OK, thanx dude.

I'll be an extension and keep it plugged in, and attach my Passport when needed.

I am trying to learn. Seriously, I'm trying to learn.

    Cheers, dd.

Yes, mate - just leave the thing in all the time. You can usually get long or short USB extension cables. Pop into a computer repair shop and get them to make one up for you - then you can choose your own length.
Err, if they do that sort of thing, of course...

Sorry about the delay in answering - time lapse thing.....

I've used E-SATA before we had USB 3 PC's. Use it now on one PC but it's pretty redundant and for the same reason as MTD, to free up another USB port.

Video cards are getting pretty dam big they'll need to be bolted to the external case soon.

I was looking for a drive the other day.
I'm not sure what to get.
I mostly want it for movies. I have a 1tb media drive, but it getting on and has trouble with newer movies, and with Blu ray copies, 1 tb is not really that much.
3000 baht per 1 Tb seems to be about the going rate.
Buffalo looked like it was trying to hard in it's packaging tbo.
I have a bunch of airports so can wirelessly enable any sort of drive.
I was a seagate satellite that has built in wireless that looked nice, but they only come with 500gb.
Should I go with a bunch of 1tb portables, or look to a standalone drivebay?

The little 1TB portables are so light and easy, and fast now...

If between WD and Toshiba I'd defo go toshiba, have tried them both, around the 3K for 1TB mark.

Meanwhile I got a 500 GB WD portable that shat me so much I pegged it against the wall and it shattered. How to recover all those videos? Tape is in tact. Pretty sure it can be done.

    9999,

What specifically was the problem with your portable HD?

    (Just trying to learn).

I do know, if my portable went to sh*t, then I will lose all of this stuff....

It was just a cable issue like dawg said they happen.

Not 100% sure but I think the sockets for WD's are dodgy and were down after being plugged / unplugged hundreds of times. I think it's worth always leaving the cord in the HDD and just plugging in and out of USB.

    OK,

But if your cable is always in the HDD - which is on your desktop or laptop, you also keep the USB always plugged into your protable, right?

Then you plug the end of the portable USB into the extension already connected to the laptop.,

(I may sound ignorant - I am. I am asking because I have spend hours and hours downloading shit for future use that I will have to move to my Portable and eventually out of/delete it from my old laptop which is headed for 'laptop cemetary' soon.

I would hate to lose all of this stuff.

I'll be buying a new laptop in about 5-7 weeks in the US. (Sony Vaio, or Acer). They will either have 500 or 750 amount of storage space, but I want to keep putting stuff onto my portable. I may eventually buy another portable, as I want to downloand a sh*tload of stuff.

Toshiba has their HD's up to 3TB made in WD factories. May be different but likely same inner workings.
