What's good in computer hardware these days?

    Situation:

I have an old socket 939 motherboard. Been pulled apart, upgraded, doubly upgraded, and then some more with bits and pieces I've picked up on auction sites. Currently its a nice o'clocked Opteron dual core processor, water cooling, fast RAM. It's done me well for 7 years which is a good return for cheap parts added to a good motherboard.

But now it's starting to show it's age. Complains when I play more recent games.

So it's out with the old, in with the new. I want something that I can play with, overclock, add to. Don't mind paying top dollar for a motherboard that will see me through another few years. Everything else can be upgraded later.

    So what's good?

I believe Intell has surpassed AMD recently on the processor front.
Some people think it don't, but it be.

Z77 chipset & Asrock mobos seem to be big on the gamer/techie forums.

    That does look good.

Been reading a few rants from the Z77 vs X79 enthusiasts and the X79 looks to have a lot more potential, though currently not well supported by Intel. I'm still looking at the CPUs but the 3820 looks good for price/speed.

Do you own the specs you posted?
If so, do you like it?

Quad channel memory on the X79 does up to 64 GB!!!

Who would ever use that much?

    Maybe Neo would.

I ordered it a few days ago but have not yet got it.

My old E8200 dual core cpu died (thermal avalanche) and it is not easy to find someone selling a socket 775 cpu nowadays, it is all socket 1156 which btw appeared a few month after I built that computer.

So today it is socket 1156 with just a few socket 2011 cpu's available but that will change next year when Intel starts to phase out socket 1156 with a whole new series of socket 2011 cpu's.
If I jump onto socket 1156 then I will be in the same situation as before if I want to upgrade or repair after 2-3 years so that is my main reason for choosing a socket 2011 motherboard and cpu today.

I will use my old PCI 2.0 graphics card for another year and I will only populate 4 of the 8 memory sockets so I will not use the cpu+mb fully out, that will be future updates.

Price differences between the Mobos seem to be for all the added extras. I've come up with a list of things I don't need but it seems irrelevant given that you have to buy the upper tier to get more slots & connections.

From Thanni in Bangkok, got all parts a few days ago. I added a medium range PCI 3.0 graphics card to the order and had to wait for it since it was a brand new model.

what are the SSD prices like in Thailand compared to Singapore ?

I am stopping in Singapore for a night in october to get an Asus UX32VD ( and a SG note2 )and I want to immediately replace the spinning drive with a 256gig SSD

looking at the prices for 64 or 128gig SSDs looks like for desktops it is very good bang for your buck to get the speed boost of having your OS and cache on a SSD

After a lot of indecisiveness over whether to go with the Asus Pro or Deluxe I decided I didn't really need 64 GB of RAM and picked the Asus Rampage IV formula. Then found out it wasn't being stocked anymore by any suppliers (stupid 3rd world country!) and nobody was selling them. Found one on online auction site. 3rd hand, not tested, dodgy description, going cheap. Took the risk, got the mobo, flashed latest Bios and it booted perfectly! $NZ570 mobo for $NZ116. Well stoked with that. Spent the savings on a 7850 graphics card and some bling.

HD movies no longer look like a slideshow. Games play without BSOD. WEI stands at 7.5 and will go up when the new gpx card arrives. Haven't even touched any of the myriad of overclocking features on this yet.

New watercooling gear arrives from 'Merica in a couple of weeks. Don't think I'm gonna need it.

what's the difference between i7 or i5 and those professional XEON 6 Core CPU @ 2.2 Ghz

it seems that the i5 and i7 are for toys, not serious computing

Lom, could you enlighten us ?

    it means nothing,

it's simply for clueless retards who think they need a certain score is what they need to have their PC upgraded

No, you're telling me it didn't improve anything. Can now play games at full settings. HD movies no longer look like a slideshow. And the CPU is hardly breaking a sweat. Upgrade path is there for socket 2011. Pretty much hits all the points in the OP.
