So I ordered an iPad 3

The wife really wants one as she needs something with a high-resolution screen for work, and I have a friend visiting from the States next month, so I had a 64GB Wifi (didn't bother with the 4G model) on the way.

I will mention that if anyone else if planning to order one this way, you can't use a CC card from outside the US- I had to use my mom's card (I didn't want to inconvenience my friend further by asking him to do all the work of ordering it as well).

It was USD$700 (~21K baht), plus another $40 or so in taxes (free shipping).

I have joined the dark side at last (though at least I can say it isn't mine...)

    Anybody else getting one?
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

I was working with a group making PPP on their iPad2s yesterday, quite impressive it was - didn't realise that the touchscreen added so much to the task; got me thinking about getting one meself actually.

Gents: Having given up my plans to get a Kindle Fire, is the IPAD 3 or 4 what I should be looking at next. It's more for the wife and kids than me. I will Google it, of course, but would also be most interested in your reviews re capabilities for Asia users. Thanks in advance.

Yup- I'm kind of a sucker for this stuff.

I've got an Asus EP121 (though it's starting to feel a bit dated, it's still a great tablet, and the only Windows-based tablet that I know of), 2 HP Touch Pads (though I got them at a firesale price in the US), and a Kindle fire.

Unless you really need something Windows-based, I would seriously consider the Asus Transformer- I really like the Android platform, and I think Asus makes a great product.

Mostly, but there is no non-Windows-based tablet out there that is a replacement for a real laptop or desktop- I would never entrust anything important solely to a tablet, whether it's an iPad or anything else.

There's a reason even Apple won't call the thing a 'computer'.

Still that screwed-up proprietary Apple stuff- I didn't order any of it as I can get it in LOS, but I'm annoyed that I will need $30+ (in the US- probably more here) cables to hook it up to my TV.

why are so many of the posters obsessed with having the latest gadget? Especially Apple products? Every 3 or 4 months a newer version comes out and it seems the same sheep line up to pay outrageous prices for small modifications the are held back by the manufacturers so they can continue to gouge the customers. I use a computer for work and for pleasure. Its a dell Inspiron 1525 and its 4 years old. does everthing I need to do and more. This stuff of cliche' electronics garbble is simply twit talk IMO. Better to buy gold or stock with that 30,000 baht. At least it increases in value and there's never a revision.

I like gadgets, and (as I said) my wife can use the thing for work- it will probably be fun to play with- more fun than a little gold bar, at any rate.

Apart from the obsession factor, we can see clearly where the 'future' is heading...

It used to be that 'everyone' wanted a bigger screen, etc...

Now, we don't wanna lug around a bigger laptop...

I could use something a lot more portable that can do everything a laptop can...

    And they are getting closer...

Don't forget we will be eligible for priority seating at Starbucks once they downgrade the iPad 2 owners (I'm not sure 1st gen iPad owners are even allowed inside anymore).

All I can see is the ipad 3 gets a slightly better processor, although the ipad 2 is no slouch. they both run on IOS 5.1. The iPad 3 gets a slightly better camera, but the camera is good on the iPad 2. The iPad 3 gets a better screen too, but the iPad 2 screen is alright.

I wouldnt be flogging an iPad 2 to upgrade to an iPad 3, but if you never had an iPad it might be worth it. I dunno

    The screen resolution is higher (2048 x 1536), the camera is better, blah-blah-blah- from what I read I wouldn't consider a 3 if I already owned a 2.

    There's a comparison chart here:

The 4g is meant to be up to 10 times faster than 3g too but that's no good in Thailand, I never use 3G only wifi anyhow. If you are in swampy and want the wifi just stand outside the rop lounges, there's no password, then after you've picked it up u can walk away

I've done a few PDF feedback documents for iPads. They work sometimes, but GoodReader' is crap according to my client.

    Neophilia, perhaps?
