    Hainan island. anyone been?

Hainan airlines now fly vientiane to haikou )hainan island) twice a week. im thinking of going next month while the kids are on holiday. They say its the hawaii of china? havent booked anything yet as i have a broken arm. This shouldnt be much of a hinderance ? as i plan on travelling by train. plane and ferry mostly and will be treating myself right , will see the doc on thursday and if all good will get shit booked and grab visa etc. my plan thus far is to fly 1 way to haikou, take the train to sanya, and back. then take the train ( The train goes inside the ferry )interesting)) to Guangzhou, (sleeper car) Either Train to Guilin or fly, then train or fly to lijiang. followed by train to Dali then train or plane to Kunming and fly back to Lao, I nutted all this out in Theory while i was in hospital . Bit of a train enthusiast myself (coz i drink beer without nobody fucking with me) and i reckon the wife and kids will like it to. or should i leave them at home?

They used to call Bangkok 'the Venice of the east', too.

So maybe bear that in mind.

googled it sounds great other than the Chinese until I got to the last sentence...

    Eastern Hawaii
Belonging to the northern part of the tropics and virtually at the same latitude as Hawaii, it has a tropical monsoon climate and is known as the 'Eastern Hawaii'. Its average annual temperature is 23-25°C while the average temperature of the coldest February ranges between 16-20°C and the hottest August between 35-39°C.

Faark. The websites paint a prettier picture than the last few comments. It's about $250 return to Vientiane so fairly cheap and What appeals to.me is it's not a long flight. I only planned on spending 2 or 3 nights there and if itscgood can always come back. Looks like it's low season so hotels shouldn't be expensive. Can't see this airline lasting long on this route so was thinking have a look while it's easy to get to. . The idea is to have a look at a few places we havent been to before and fly back to Lao via kunming or guangzhou. Got to amuse the kids and i can't work much at the moment anyway. Been to china twice before and despite the fact the beers shit and its full of throat clearing chinks i found it alright.

You mean this? What was hilarious about it?
Words like "tedious", "dreary", "repetitive", "attention-seeking", "splenetic" "histrionic" are more commonly associated with "Ant", never "hilarious".

    Forget about Ant FFS.

Sanya (20 years ago) was a typical new build Chinese city. Nothing of interest except a bunch of same same hotels, some expensive seafood restaurants and as noted lots of hookers. The beach was ok but polluted with sewage from outlet pipes and locals taking a dump. There were a few tourist spots up the coast, an old Chinese town, a monkey park, a freshwater pearl fishery.

Anyway that's a while back before tourism really took off.

The only reason I ever heard of the place was because they apparently have a forest load of wild Agarwood trees there plus heaps of plantations. Never did make it there though.
I'm looking forward to your trip report.

Stayed in Haikou for a weekend, for work a few years a go.

Lovely resort - about six pools.

Seems like a nice enough island, except for the Chinese.

What was the journey like from Vientiane to Udon ?
Was it by ambulance and did they whisk you straight through immigrations?

It was by ambulance that was organised by my wife's auntie. I wouldn't describe the border crossing as " whisked " I lay moaning in the back while my wife waited in line at immigration with my passport and a pic of me snapped on her phone. It was pretty much what I expected from the coonts

Last time I was there was in the 90's, with my then HK Chinese wife. Hainan is beautiful- well worth a look. Especially if you like sand and sea. And rental sex.
Lots of ladies of the night, even back then. Anyway, 20 years have passed- so I expect the place will be thoroughly commercialised and sinofied by now. Hopefully it will still have some of it's olde charm though.
