    Koojo goes to the bank.

Just a quick nip over to Hong Kong for some banking biz, thought I'd wander around Wan Chai and take a few pics while I was there.
I don't like these trips to Hong Kong really. Nice for a change but too quick to do anything interesting but it was a nice mild sunny day so....

    A little taste of Thailand.

Can't have a HK pic thread without pics of trams, right.

    Old style HK.

It's definitely lost a lot of character.
I'd have loved to have been there in the 70s.

There you go, short and sweet. Must remember to take the camera next time, these were all taken on the phone.

It's my barber from Suk Soi 8. I may be tipping him too much.

Well at least the sun came out for ya.

I was in HK last week and it pissed down the whole time, making me have to sit in Delaneys, Queen Vic, Old China Hand and The Dog House.

Ho Hum...Did manage to buy the misses a Tshirt with a pick of Hong Kong on the front so not a total wash out...

I lied. Sent my mates wife out the pub to get said Tshirt.

Thank you looks as grim as Bangkok or the rest of China, how's the air quality?
Funny that in a place with a majority of Chinese there is a China town.

Also on a practical level can you travel to HK on the high speed trains from Kunming or is there still the old visa border nonsense when I was in Aomen?

HK rarely gets blue skies anymore. I still like the place, but in cold weather it's miserable.

The Chinatown thing was a joke, just a local market street tucked under modern highrise and overpass.
You can get the High speed train, you may have to change in Guangzhou for HK, not sure and yes, you will still have to show your passport.

Are there still highrises like Chungking Mansions which look seedily post-apocalyptic ? Like the opening scenes of Blade Runner ?

My sis and her 14 year old daughter came to visit a few months ago and they booked online the garden villa hostel, which while sounding nice is actually a floor of the Chungking mansions.
They wanted a couple of days in Hong Kong by themselves before coming over.
I sent photos and reports, everything I could find, to try and dissuade her but she absolutely wouldn't listen.
When I went to meet them to bring them over here, after two days in the mansions they were mortified.
What a shithole full of niggers and pakis. (no disrespect to black or west asian gentleman intended)
My sister always was one who just wouldn't listen.
Oh, and Chingking mansions is decidedly low rise in the new Hong Kong.

Umm no. As I recall I bought them along with a pair of Loakes, and the tab came in at around 350 quid or something like that. Just a spur of the moment purchase on my way home. I'd only popped in for an ironing board cover which the maid had been banging on about for a few weeks.

Many floors of Chungking Mansions are like different worlds !
And yes....some of the more African floors do smell quite strange.

If you have an ID card for HK, then yes. Very easy.

If not and just effectively a tourist, it is doable but can be a pain in the arse.

Firstly, you need to go to a branch of the bank (suggest HSBC) that is aware that it is possible.

Secondly, you need a mailing address, ideally in HK. If outside of HK, you will need to visit the branch twice - first to apply, second to bring the letter they will send to that address. They will also send you a Security device for online bank to the same address so using a hotel address will often not work.

Thirdly, it helps if you have an account with the bank in another country already and can get a letter of recommendation from your current bank.

Fourthly - if none of the above works, which 60-70% of the time it will not, you open a business there and a business account, and after that is up and running you can apply to open a personal savings account at the same branch.

Basically - it is a hassle, and HK don't want your custom ultimately. So ask youself why you would specifically want an HK bank account. Other places such as Isle of Man, Guernsey, Seychelles, British Virgin Islands are a lot simpler.

Simple answer is no. It is not easy. Can be done, and you will often hear of people walking in and opening an account straight away, but this is very rare these days unless you plan to deposit big money.

I went into HSBC in Hong Kong two weeks ago to ask the same question about a bank account for someone I know who lives abroad.

Its pretty straightforward. It has to be opened in person. Bring passport, proof of address, and if you anticipate credits to the account from a specific place (eg dividends), bring some paperwork along to give an indication of the source of those payments.

Indeed - to apply is very straight forward. Getting it can be a different matter. Just be sure to go to one of the big main branches and ideally personally give them a call first to ensure you bring everything they want, with you.

I've been to Hong Kong 3 times now.

I've always liked it but unfortunately any decent hotel room is bloody expensive same as Singapore.

Banging around the place and eating in street markets and small restaurants are very reasonable.

It changes. But before, or now you may or can get express visa/something near exit. I have travelled to Shenzhen (from HK by train that is) quite a many times, with valid visa. I would suggest keeping up with China Border Control, they are very advanced.
