Looking at google it takes about 3 hours to fly from kunming to shanghai , which isnt to bad , but i can add on a few more hours fucking around in airports taxis etc, 1 and a half hours flight to vientiane to kunming sounds better , perhaps a couple of nights there then maybe a side trip to dali city, ive heard thats worth a look to, and its only about 45 minute, cheap to, about $70

Would love to see all the places mentioned but its really only a short break , first time to china though, so if it appeals i can check it out again when ive more time, I live in vientiane so its right in my backyard , will possibly get a long break in the wet season when the work slows down,
Cheers S landreth, enjoyed your thread about krabi,

If you're going to Hong Kong let me know and I'll put you onto a Hotel in a prime location.

Cost you a few bucks but Accommodation is like that for anything semi decent.

The weather is foul in China right now.

    Hazy, cold, windy, shitty, choke-inducing.

I stay in Xiamen, and it's considered to have good air quality. Today the AQI hit 200 (DANGEROUS)

Xiamen Air Pollution: Real-time PM2.5 Air Quality Index (AQI)

Guangzhou would be worse. Kunming reads 66 at the moment.

    Enter at your own risk!

I'm going to bump my old thread,
The wife has been pestering me to take her to hong kong for a while now and as the tickets with Lao airlines are still relatively cheap she has got her way. We will fly in to Guangzhou on the 20th this month have 1 night in gz then take the train to Kowloon arriving at hunghom station, booked the train online so it should hopefully be a doddle, don't have to put up with the canton fair that I was warned about, just having 4 nights in hk and will stay in causeway bay, haven't been to hk for over 30 years, and only saw the inside of a few bars, I've googled the fuk out of it and now have a rough idea of what to see and do, but any suggestions from you guys would be much appreciated, got another night in GZ on the way back. I'm fully expecting my wallet to cop a severe hammering. Tried to talk her into going somewhere nice and economical like Bangladesh but she was having none of it

Hong Kong is fine once you have your accommodation sorted. There is no such thing as budget accommodation in Hong kong that is unless you consider a 3 times 4 meter box a fair bit of crack.

On the up side if you do not drink in pubs and frequent up market restaurants its quite OK.

There is plenty of small local restaurants that will serve you a meal for a fair price, just follow the locals. plenty of cheap beer in the 7/11.

Nice having a beer on the street looking at a the cracking Chinese girls.

Hong Kong is friggin brilliant. Hit Disneyland if you have time.

I went to Guangzhou about 3 years ago to meet a lady I met online... a total waste of money. Heavy smog to the point the middle of the day was dark. Became really clear after a rain, but smoggy again within a couple of hours.

The language barrier was very difficult, but I did have some university students approach me to practice their English. Planned on staying a month, but left after 2 weeks. Hotel was cheap...about $200 a month. Food was good, but still lost 10 pounds in the 2 weeks.

Having visited China is one major reason I now live in Thailand. Too cold up north.
    Good luck with your visit.

The wallets a bit lighter after hong kong it was good crack though and I enjoyed it, back in Guangzhou now for 1 night , can't decide if I like Gz or not , the language barriers definitely a head fuck, plenty of eye candy though, relaxing in the pool (fuckers heated)the plan is to go look at shaman island and maybe a dinner (beer) cruise along the pearl river, I've asked about 30 chinamen where all this is, nobody seems to know, I need to get directions written in Chinese or I've got no chance, staying in a great hotel here so someone in the lobby should know, fucking huge city to, bung up a thread when I get back if anyone's interested

BLD - Did you go to the Sex Toy traders area in Guangzhou? They make most of the world dongs, dildos, shaking things, vibing things, insertables, etc. in GZ and there is a market about the size of 50 footies fields where you can walk around. Blooming hilarious afternoon out - heaps better than an island!

Probably the only enjoyable thing that I did in Guangzhou is the Pearl River boat trip. If you take the night ride, it is quite scenic and you can dine on board. Pricey though.
