Received the draft itinerary today and will make some modifications, before we agree to the trip.

From the agent in Thailand (itinerary and dates not included for obvious reasons):

I have just got feedback from our colleague in China and found that there are no restrictions about the number of tourists and nationality currently. So, it’s OK for 2 persons travel to Tibet.

About the train to Lhasa, we would suggest that you are better fly from Bangkok to Beijing and then taking a train (soft sleeper) to Lhasa directly, which takes about 1day+20hours.It will be more convenience and interesting than flight to Xining + Train to Lhasa. We have experienced from many of our clients enjoyed the landscape with the train Beijing – Lhasa and it will be a different experience to cross from the modern city to the original Tibetan area.

As you mentioned to stay in Lhasa for 8D/7N, but after one overnight stay in Beijing and almost two days on the train, the exact duration in Lhasa will be 6D/5N (See the outline below).According to our experience, most of the clients would like a 3-4 days in Lhasa and then go to the other city to have a visit inside the Tibet.

Next post about our trip; unless there are complications, will be a thread on Tibet.

    I lied

The itinerary has been set. We just have to get the travel agent to agree to a 100% refund if the Chinese restrict entrance into Tibet a day or two before we arrive. This request might be like pulling teeth, but they should understand our concern.

Places (not all listed below) we plan to visit while there (not in this order).

Day 1: transferred to the train station, where you will get on the train to Lhasa
Day 2: whole day on the train
    Day 3: Leisure day,…acclimate
Day 4: Lake Yamdrok Yumtso, Palkhor Monastery and Kumbun Stupa
Day 5: Tashilumpo Monastery and a visit to the old market in the old part of the town
    Day 6: Numtso Lake
Day 7: Drigung Monastery (Sky Burial), Detrong Hot Spring
Day 8: Potala Palace, Sera Monastery, Barkhor Street
    Day 9: Ganden Monastery

If anyone would like to learn about a Sky Burial and the reason why (which I’ll post on our Tibet thread also) watch the video below (it's a bit eerie but done in good taste).

Done,..... and I hope this thread will help others who would like to visit Tibet.

We received our Visa’s to enter China and our permit to travel to Tibet. If you’re in Thailand, visit these sites to get the information/forms you’ll need for a Visa.

Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Royal Thai

    Visas & Entry Permits

The Tibet permit will be requested by your travel agent/Tibet guide [for a permit to enter Tibet (and to book your train ticket over the Tibetan Plateau) you need your Chinese Visa first]. Google Tibet Travel Permit for more information on obtaining a Tibet permit. There are many sites/travel agents that can help you.

Good stuff, mate - looking forward to the pics. Try to pick out the Tibetan faces amongst the Chinese masses if you're able.

Yes...your pics are going to be revealing. Please give a little money to at least one needy Tibetan person....not necessarily someone who is begging....just a Tibetan who in your opinion needs a helping hand. I feel their pain. Oh....and importantly, don't let anyone SEE that that person has been given money....

I am on the lines about wanting to go back, I worked up there running mtn bike trips to Kathmandu in 1985/86 and loved my time spent there and on the road but have not been back since 1988.
Saw a video shot in early 2000 on the streets of Lhasa an was shocked at what it had become

    My photos from back than

Not sure but i thought that the Chinese stopped the sky burial outside Lhasa years ago.
here are some really powerful images of the burial

AS far as visas go, I am up in Vang Vieng , Laos now and was in Luang Namtha, ( only 35 kms from the Chinese border)

You can apply for a chinese visa there and also in Luang Prabang easily.

Fxck China, Free Tibet. Why are they so scared of the place being open to travellers and His Holiness the Dali Lama?

This is a picture of an original Tibet Permit

    for two people,.....

About the permit. You might see the original for a short time if you're traveling by train without a guide with you as we did (when leaving by train from Beijing you have to show you have a permit). Once we reached Lhasa we were asked for the original by our guide and we never saw it again. Try to get a copy (or three) from your guide (keep one with you).

You're not going to be able to keep the original when you leave Tibet.

Suggestion. Do not hire a Chinese tour guide/operator; to show you around Tibet, they will not give you the real history. Although their numbers are dwindling, hire a Tibetan tour guide.
