Where to visit in Chiang Mai area?

Plan to visit CM around April 9th for 2 or 3 days en route from Sakhon Nakhon to Pattaya for Songkran on 15th - 19th. (yes, I know its some 'en route'!)

We can VIP bus from SakNak to CM or get a car/driver for 2000 a day but will prob fly NOK from CM down to BKK (or maybe VIP bus CM straight to sin city).

Will have wife, kids age 11 and 9, and MIL (age 70 ish,) with me, all from SakNak although wife and kids been in UK several years now and are 90% farang.

None of us have ever been to CM; where should we go?

We can arrange to keep the car and driver if necessary till we got to Pattaya for the mayhem.

Given we have a couple of spare days should we even be going to CM or the shorter trip over the border to Vientianne? I've heard not much of interest in Vientianne.

Chiang Mai Zoo is decent for the family,You can get really close to the Hippo's.
Night Bizzare market has some fanstastic sea food restaurants.

Very cheap place to stay and eat,Its my favourite place in Thailand,If it had a beach I would stay there full time. Its worth making the effort,Have a great time !

depends on what you like, obviously

the tourist trail up at Mae Rim (about 20km outside CM) is always good; they have elephant camps, monkey school, snake farm, butterfly farm and the Mae Sa waterfall (just there yesterday)

lots of resorts too, if you want to stay in the hills

inside CM there are several beautiful temples and lots of little sois where life seems to be so slow as to be almost immoveable

nice markets, and a good second hand market at weekends in the morning. Also two seperate craft markets on Sat and Sun evenings which tourists love

Would have been better for you to stay in CM for Songkran, it's a lot better than Pattaya. If you've got kids with you should pay a visit to the Night Safari, they'll love it.

It's good fun, even if (or maybe because) all the buildings look they were designed by Albert Speer. I've been a few times, got a bunch of photos which I might post on here - would have done already but the gallery interface is a real pain if you've got more than a couple of photos.

^I've been to the night safari. I thought it was good, but other people were annoying me by using the flash on their cameras despite being told numerous times DO NOT USE FLASH. It's hard to see anything at a distance using flash at night anyway, if they wanted pics they should have gone in the daytime. The light show they do is worth seeing and you can have a wander around and look at some animals in cages...

Agree with Andy about Mae Sa Waterfall, I love it there. If you decide to visit Inthanon there's a few nice waterfalls around there too. Can't remember the name but there's one next to a botanic garden (i think) hard going if you want to get up near the top of the waterfall but the garden below it is a treat, for me anyway, reminded me of fairytales.

I don't much care for Songkran in any of the cities. I stay inside the Villa compound where it is nice and dry.

If you've been to a few Songkran festivals it does wear thin pretty quickly, especially if you're a resident rather than a visitor. If you're on holiday and especially if you've got kids with you it's fantastic. There's always a few grumps who complain but most people really enjoy it, for a day or two at least.

as a former frequent visitor and now resident, the novelty has worn off. Besides, the way songkran is done these days, I consider it a hazard. yea, call me a "scrooge"....

The wife, kids and in laws like to go to Lampang elephant park. It has the normal elephant show plus you get to see them bathing in the river and see the ones being cared for in the hospital. We normally stay in the Lampang River Lodge about 10km south. The place is in a wooded area and we stay in the huts overlooking the lake ( Which is also nice to walk around)...There is also a swimming pool for the kids.

As for Songkran..If you are in Patts for Songkran where will you "Shower' MIL?..Also I think Pattaya celebrate Songkran a week after everybody else....

^agreed, was there when it was just opened, now i reckon it has sadly gone down the dreaded path of over commercilised, anyway, its still 100% on that other place...and there is that reseviour up in the hills on the way to chang rai, forget the name of the place now, but you can jump on a long tail and go out to some house boats and get a feed/swim generally really relax, definately on my radr for next time, though i plan to stay the night
