yesterday the gf & I went out to visit our friend Striper at Care for Dogs. What an amazing organization! Probably 7-10 workers/volunteers & a few hundred dogs.

The place was of dignity & health, these people are doing an amazing job!

    Here's a few pictures:

    Striper looked GREAT!

    this dog is gorgeous:

a few random pictures of the facility:

today we're taking Striper to her new home in San Sai, I'm both excited & nervous. I'll try & snap a few pictures, but my main concern is making sure Striper doesn't run off, or jump out of the pick-up truck we're taking.

Love the black & white shot. Is that AF or MF mode?

Also, I've been thinking of buying a zoom lens for my camera as have a 10% discount from that shop my friend bought her camera from. Any recommendations?

^ manual focus on the 450d is a joke, I have to use autofocus (I usually pick a focal spot, & let the camera focus from there).

My images were so much more sharper when I was shooting w/ the AE-1p manual focus. The digital pictures I shoot now have to have a sharpen filter applied to them a lot more than I'd like.

I'm not a real big zoom lens guy, my 50mm is tight enough, especailly w/ 1.6 conversion making it 80mm.

I think Bobcock is into zoom lenses, maybe he could chirp in on this one. I think a Canon USM lens should be good, ie this one:
Canon EF 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 IS USM Zoom Lens, digital cameras, digital photography, photography, digital slr, camera recommendation, price comparison, photographic companies, camera companies, digital camera best prices,

    but I'm not 100% sure.

What camera do you have Momo?

I've been reading up a bit lately and found out that my lenses are a little too good for my camera, that to maximise the quality of the lenses I should have a full frame, which hopefully I will before Xmas with the issue of the 5D Mk II.

I must admit, I always loved fixed FL lenses and will certainly buy a fixed 50mm when I have the 5D.

^ Hey I'm a girl, yes I've got a 450D. Thanks for the info Bobcock.Today this girlfriend of mine has decided the camera she bought is too technical for her needs so she wants my 450D as she doesn't need the manual functions on the 40D she bought. Anyway, I gave her HK$3000 and swapped cameras so now I've got hers. Will go and check out the lens you recommended, thanks very much.

^ oops, I'm sorry I think I was thinking by default you were a guy.

Well today we picked up Striper & drove her to her new home out in the country/San Sai.

When we 1st got there she had a bandage on her, a dog might of nipped her, so a small infection developed, but nothing big.

Here she is when we 1st arrived to my friends house:

The bandage was coming off, so I removed it, the wound wasn't that bad.

So my friend arrived w/ her friend, who was Striper's new owner, so we drove the little pup to her new home.

Here she is in the back of the pick-up truck, she's very brave!

^ this was taken w/ my little point & shoot Canon. I still like that camera.

When she arrived at her new home, she was greeted by this little guy:

^ this dog is some stray who moved in yesterday, I guess he knew there was a pretty girl moving in.

Here's some more random pictures of Striper getting to know her new surroundings:

I'm positive Striper will be happy at this new place, it's very peaceful and the people seem very nice. We'll come out in a couple of weeks to see her, and check up on her progress.

I really like the B&Ws I'm producing in Photoshop.

I really love PS, it's been a good friend for around 13 years. As soon as I launched PS 3 on my old Win95 machine, I knew it was love.

I'm tempted to buy a 50mm fast lens for my trip to angkor later this week and the sharpness of your pics fascinates me.

    2 questions

    1. Which is the lens you have, the 50mm 1.8 (at around 3,300 THB) fotofile.net or the 50mm 1.4 (at 13,000 THB) fotofile.net, I know you said the 1.8, wanted to make sure?

    2. Truthfully, how much sharpening do you do, I sharpen my pics but only using Unsharp Mask and I hardly notice any difference. Yours look so sharp and yet don't look oversharpened. Do you sharpen the RAW or the JPG?

    ^ Hey BC,

Sorry for the late reply, just got back from BKK/Pattaya

    Picture thread to follow.

I have the cheap 50mm lens, & it's fabulous! The only thing is the construction is really cheap, looks & feels like a toy, but the glass is top notch, I suggest it 100%.

As for sharpening, I do it in PS3, using a jpg. What I do is select the areas that are too soft, throw them up on another layer & just sharpen using the sharpen filter. If it's too much, I lower the opacity to 70%-80%. I also adjust the levels on the point of focus a little bit, just to draw the eye a little more.

Hope that makes sense, can't wait to see the photos from your trip, have fun!

well I picked up another lens, the Tamron 17-50mm /f-2.8 XR Di II to be exact:
Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens Review

I bought it at Photo Bug for roughly 14,000 b, on par w/ what I'd get it for in the states or HK, so I actually bought it at a retail store.

It's nice as hell, I love to go really wide & have the option to go tight. The f/2.8 makes it pretty fast, so it works well in low light situations.

    Here are a few samples:
