    Food lines growing longer

CityNews – 21st April 2020, queues of people lining up for necessaries and food are becoming increasingly long around town, as more and more people feel the economic tightening of a frozen economy.

Mali Wongsuwan is one such recipient of Chiang Mai public’s largess and said to CityNews, “I used to be market vendor, but when COVID hit, and after the markets were shut down, I no longer have a living. I went to register for economic relief as promised by the government but still haven’t received any money at all. I just don’t know where I am supposed to find money to pay for food? So all I can do now is spend my days waiting in hot queues just to survive from one day to the next. I can’t afford to be ill as I need to stand in this line to make sure that I can eat.”

The authorities have recently come out to try to manage to the proliferation of food and goods donations stations, after reports of lack of social distancing. They have asked the public to instead donate goods to them and allow them to do the distribution. However, not everyone is comfortable with this edict, preferring to do the distribution themselves.

The new order is that no one may distribute food to more than 100 people per day. The lines have to also be socially distant and all people wear masks. Hand sanitisers must also be provided by those handing out the goods.

Authorities do admit, however, that they do not have enough personnel to cover all distribution points, so ask the public to please follow the COVID procedures.

The 100 people a day thing is not going to happen, you only have to see the numbers in queues for free food and water around Pattaya to know that person #101 and everyone behind him/her isn't going to be turned away when there's still food available to be given out to an ever growing and highly appreciative population of needy people.

What started out as a few restaraunts and bars giving out free food has turned into a massive effort by so many people and businesses around town to provide free meals each day, there's even a Facebook page letting the less fortunate know of times and places where they can get something to eat. Even places like some 7/11's are setting up tables outside with things like noodles and sandwiches that people in need can just help themselves to. I know Pattaya and its business people get bad wraps from many but to see the way this place has pulled together (both Thai and Farang) to help people has been amazing, if someone is hungry there's someone prepared to help them. It must be a very humbling thing to have to line up in the extreme temperatures we're having now in long queues to get a lunch pack and bottle of water, especially for the elderly and kids

Personally, I've donated to a local eatery that's putting together food basics packages (rice, noodles, tinned fish, cooking oil, fish sauce, eggs, etc) along with meal packs and delivering to those who can't join the queues, pics of living conditions and the gratitude of these people is truly heart-breaking.

I must agree the efforts made by a number of establishments providing the needy with meal packages is really wonderful.

There are a number of farangs who are instigating these charity events and I hope the locals appreciate their efforts.

My missus spent a day at the Culinary School kitchen in Pattaya Nua cooking meals and baking cakes for the HCW at the two public hospitals.

That is just so sad. Can't survive without queueing, is worried that she'll catch the virus while doing so as that means she can't queue anymore.

    Fark

Hardly. Natural xenophobia and government-fostered dislike and blaming of foreigners will take care of that

Yea, but you live in Adelaide . . .

(Damn, for weeks we haven't had any food deliveries aside from fruits and vegetables . . . and raw fish, cooked goods aren't allowed)
