The 5 best Khao Soi in Chiang Mai. Tried and Tested.

Have yet to meet anyone that doesn't like a good Khao Soi.

Unfortunately most experience them in a touristy Thai-Western restaurant when they put it together there and then, rather than a traditional Northern Khao Soi restaurant, where it's made and served properly.

The same half a dozen or so Khao Soi restaurants appear on various Top 5 Khao Soi websites.

The first one to try was Khao Soi Mae Sai, near the corner of the moat on the way from Doi Suthep/CMU.

    Googen Map.

    https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaura...hiang_Mai.html

    Khao Soi Mae Sai

A small, unremarkable looking Thai restaurant along a suburban little soi.

    Absolutely fantastic.

The noodles were perfect, the fried noodles were light and done to perfection, ie, not even close to being too hard.

The chicken had been perfectly marinaded, fantastic flavour and fell off the bone. Tremendously succulent and tender.

The curry rich and oozing with flavours, without being too over powering.

Certainly the best I've ever experienced.

    40thb.

Which is comically cheap for what you get.

    9.7/10.

-0.3 due to the onions being chopped in a manner that they're still all connected to each other.

Chop off the bottom piece please, so you have pieces of individual pieces, not 1/4 of an onion that's still attached to itself.

    Side note.

Got some bags take-away, one of which was beef. Unfortunately the beef meat was still attached to some big flappy piece of skin, or inner mucus flappy thing.

Puts children and Lulu right off. Clean chunks of beef please.

    Next up,

    Khao Soi Khun Yai.

Along the inside of the moat, just past Chang Puak gate area.

    Googen Map.

Doesn't look like a restaurant from outside.

Located within a big walled compound, if you can't read Thai, it looks more like a sign for a warehouse or transportation company.

Appears on quite a few 'Best of...' lists.

Was a bit surprised by three things.

    1. The fried noodles were micro-noodles. (negative)

    2. The chicken wasn't on the bone, and was just various chunks of leg meat. (negative.)

    3. The taste of the curry was really quite bitter. Today's wing-woman spooned have a glass of sugar into hers.

Although never considering it a sweet dish in the slightest. That's a negative.

But at least they chopped the onions correctly.

    6/10.

    Won't be back.

    40 thb.

To be continued at a later date.

So far Khao Soi Mae Sai is winning.

Micro noodles and sliced chicken breast!

Fok that for a game of pirates.

Embrace yer inner-Jeff, Dill, and toss that Eatigo card in the drink.

This is for proper food, not manufactured crap for people that have to be boated in and given reinforced industrial strength chairs.

It wasn't that great actually. Put too much chili in it and there seemed to be a whole pack of mama noodles under those crispy noodles.
    I'll give it a 6/10.

Of course it wasn't, it was put together there and then with sliced pieces of chicken breast by some inexperienced Thai lad with snot and feces on his fingers.

Took one back home for MM for when she gets back from work.

6 out of 10 or no 6 out of 10 a man can't be left alone in a house with that and be expected not to Lulu it.

Khao Soi Mae Sai is still winning.

This beauty ^ from Nan, across from Saun Tan Temple. Best I've had. If I have it for breakfast it's without the drumstick, as pictured. None of that pickle and onion crap either just the juice of a few lime pieces. mmmmmm

The broth or stock is quite spicy enough. Its made for Northern people, not the red hot chili eating folks of Isaan..

None that I've tried have been spicy at all. More like massaman without adding the chili paste.

That's because you've never fokin' eaten it, ya dumb hippo.

Some sliced chicken breast thrown in a pan for 20 seconds with some curry paste and coconut milk in a YMCA sailorboy gay-club, it isn't.
