New Immigration chief sweeping a broom through Chiang Mai Immigration offices

Responding to constant online chatter about the ‘mess’ at the Chiang Mai Immigration offices, the new Immigration chief, Maj-Gen Surachate Hakparn, is poised to transfer the existing Chiang Mai Immigration boss to an inactive post whilst further investigations are made into the office operations.

People have been complaining about all matters, from long waits (some cited having to arrive early and waiting all day to be seen), including Chinese who are having many problems with the northern office as well.

Surachate said that the suspension of the current Chiang Mai chief would likely be for just two or three weeks and shouldn’t be assumed to be anything to do with wrong-doing. He said he believed that further training of all staff will improve the bad service.

The new Immigration head has only been in the job for a month but made it clear at his appointment that he was going to target the Immigration offices as a priority. He’s already visited some of the southern Immigration offices and is said to have made sweeping changes.

It's a start, if it's followed through. Hopefully Buriram next.

As stated - "it's a start" and very good for us (the foreign falang contingency), to be seen is if improvements pan out for us foreigners and will he actually be "rewarded" by the Thai population and administration, or overlooked, taken for granted, or unseated. He's obviously on his way in making a name for himself. Will it parlay into being beneficial for himself, yet to be seen. He's already stepped on some toes and the applecart is spilling produce. Changing existing protocol can be a hazardous and potentially risky task.

No shit and sadly on a "name by name" basis. The Thai bureaucracy system in all forms is filled with "names" who are untouchable. Traced back to family connections over generations and generations.

Yes and that is why some rules in all their archaicness don't get changed.
Rules from an age of paperwork, double-entry book-keeping and triple-checking.

Leave the Roiet office alone. Best bunch ever.
Based on some of the farang kunts I've observed at more than a few Immigration offices, no wonder Immigration staff get surly.

Agreed but. Not just my opinion Mr Norton, but my wifes as well. From our observations on going to immigration is that if they stand to benefit by an under the table payment (example) then all's good service. If you're legit and they only stand to make a 100 Baht from the extension change, then their service isn't so good. I'm legit and every fcuking year I get pissed about. This year they claimed my money hadn't been seasoned long enough. Even my missus got angry with them. FFS I've bin doing it 13 years. Now if I was to approach them and agree to pay 20,000 under the table I'd get the fooking red carpet.

The esteemed general in charge of Section 44 has shown that he is not afraid to wield the knife if people do not serve a purpose for him.
