What`s with all the bar`s being closed at 01.00?

I just got back after three weeks in CM over Songkran. I know it`s not for most, but I had a great time.

The Saturday after Songkran, I was at the Moonlight Bar (Sang Jan), out near the night safari, with some Thai friends. Had many a great night there. They usually have live

music. You don`t see too many farangs there. We left the bar about 12.30 intending on heading back to CM for a last drink. Wtf! Everything was closed at 01.00.

Even Lucky bar was closed. My Thai friend`s had to apologize, that they did not know anywhere open after 01.00.

Wtf is going on? I know I have not been back to CM for two years, but thing`s seem to have changed a lot?

Last year, I was down in Ranong/Koh Phayam....no problems getting a late drink there.

^ It gets even worse pal.

Was there just before Songkan, and the bars/restaurants weren't serving booze between the hours of 2:00-5:00pm.

A few of the places were advertising the no booze hours on laminated A4 paper in the frontage of their establishments.

The "official" closing time for bars is now 1am in Thailand.

Think it depends on what licence they have. Bars that serve food continue to serve booze over this period, but restaurants that otherwise serve booze do not.

    It is indeed a pita.

There was a change in the police ranks, and new "arrangements" had to be made.

Lucky didn't close early for long.

The general consensus is that Chiang Mai is being punished for its support for a certain colour shirt.....

^^ It was quite a bit random about who was serving, and who wasn't. Finally found somewhere that used the famous beer in coffee cup trick.

A chap at ti hotel was having a right moan about it.

IME this isn't limited to CM though.

Try getting a drink in Siam Sq. over those times, and indeed in some restaurants that used to serve beer at any time.

See Fah, for example. Presumably this is a case of the bloody ridiculous uni law.

I was told (by a lawyer friend) your bill awaits you at "Ladyboys of the North Revue Bar" and they hope you'll return for a repeat "performance'!

Agreed, it doesn't take much to ferret out a lock in in that place.

Yes, it is - but often ignored and lesser observed and enforced outside of BKK, CM, and the expected Farang ghettos.

I'm sure t-fee changes will reflect earlier closing hours, less profit to share out, etc.

Closing time around here (Mabprachan, east of Pattaya) is midnight. Thai licensing laws are about as enlightened as Thai drinking habits.

Me too actually, more than once. But I were younger then. Last I knew, it's still 2359 closing- but the BiB don't bother you if you turn the music off, or way down and keep it quiet. They'll also warn you of pending crackdowns. Of course a bit of gratitude to the policemens benevolent fund is appreciated. Most people aren't bothered by it that I know- can always head a few km towards town if you wanna late one.

It was quite easy to get a lock in after midnight when me & the mrs were there a few weeks ago.
It only happened in the bars where you were known though.

You can always try asking a motosai guy to buy you some. If you're in the area of a lot of bars kicking out, you'll find one easily.

Not gone more than 10mins in Lat Phrao. Fuck knows where they go.

Victory Monument at 2am the guy went down some dark soi and returned 15mins later.
In Nakhon Phanom at 2.30am the hotel security guy borrowed my girls bike and brought the booze to the room 20mins later.

Obviously a decent tip is in order, and a beer.

After all, they gotta buy for themselves anyway.
