On a similar note, I've been looking at houses in Hua Hin - which I'd buy with a view to AirBNB for a few years. It seems that from between 50-70k (sterling) one can acquire a three bedroom villa with a private pool just a kilometre or two from the beach. Living in the UK puts things into perspective. That's dirt cheap. That's an hour's work in Asda.

Has anyone gone the AirBNB route, and, perhaps more crucially, did it work? Or did you get your pants pulled down and buggered into oblivion?

What site do you use for property for sale in Thailand? Also wasn't there a thread a while back on here stating airbnb was illegal in Thailand or am I imagining things?

The properties on "Baht and Sold" seem over priced and geared towards newbies in English.

I've done lots of googling even had a look at rightmove and zoopla which list properties in Thailand but like you say they are all overpriced just aimed at gullible fukwits who know no better. I was thinking about Chiang Mai but dismissed it as really want to be by the coast, dismissed the Eastern seaboard as lived there for 6-7 years and no desire to go back, no interest in Phuket or Samui so favoured location at the moment that suits both me and the better half is Hua Hin, either Hua Hin itself or anywhere down below it.

There are a few quite places further down that are quiet and more 'locally' priced. Bang Saphan in PKK is a nice enough area, but would get boring after a few years I reckon.

On retiring... best to have a plan. To have visited a few to make a few acquaintances. Rather than simply fess up with a couple of suitcases.

I have a problem deciding what to do next week, let alone what to do for the next 40-45 years.

Things have sped up a bit, and it looks like I might be retiring to Chiang Mai in my late 30s rather than early 40’s.

So what to do. Would rather not:

At least not for the first 6 months.


So thinking of hobbies and activities.

Gardening/vegetable growing.

Motorbike restoration.

Bit of property development if the will takes.

Offering friendly, courteous, considerate advice to people on internet forums.

Montclair appreciation thrice weekly.

Gym and post gym 4 hands oil massage quart weekly.


Anything else advisable to pass one’s time oop North?

I am retiring at the end of this month and moving home...finally. I just tuned up my Trek Mtn bike and will come up with some routes to ride in morning

I also have a full gym set that I have not even had a chance to use. Plus I will ride my Yam R3 around the mountains. I would be up for a ride with ya if ya go street biking. Lots of shit can go wrong and that's what makes it fun.

Just a comment to the link by DD above, I would never use anything galvanized to cook food products. Under high temperature zinc and iron (along with whatever silicone is present) will decompose and liberate to Zn Oxide and will likely co deposit all over the food. It could make one pretty sick quick if used a lot. The picture DD posted was a galvanized steel plated garbage can. While simple yes likely not advisable. If you notice no smoker, BBQ pit or any cooking device is galvanized, they are either bare steel (like a 55 gal drum), porcelain coated or SST.

I recommend something made out of basic steel or spend a few bucks and go to the Thai guys that build all the SST fences and show them what you want. Besides the SST will last basically forever if 302 or 304L

Rightmove and Zoopla are always good starting points and maybe (probably) i'm out of touch with current property prices in Thailand. Just used to watching those programs on the TV, place in the winter sun, home and away etc. then you go have a gander on rightmove and zoopla and the prices for properties on the shows always seem a hell of a lot cheaper than what you see online. But yeah £70k seems a good deal for a 3 bed villa with a pool, brilliant deal in fact when you consider probably wouldn't even buy you a parking space down your way, would get a 2 bed flat in Crewe though!!!!!

At the lower end of the scale you can buy a condo in Jomtien for £10 k and live the dream

I'd have to rent for a while in the area where I was going to buy to check for noisy neighbours etc.

There are. Many Foreigner built deals with western stuff where they up and left. Lots in CM. Many are in tract home moo bans if that's your thing.

I might still give Chiang Mai a try as the climate is appealing but preference is still to be by the coast, but a few more years to decide yet, also have to decide what type of property I want as not going to be in it full time so needs a safe lock up and leave aspect to it. Seems some good deals on condos in Hua Hin right on the beach, but do I want to live in a condo for 6+ months of the year, probably not.

Why not? If your not gonna be there for a lot of the time a condo would make sense. Maybe do the airbnd thing as slap suggested but i think the thais are getting a bit funny on the likes of airbnb, uber, grabcab etc. They cant stand to see the middleman cut out and maybecthere reasoning is to make sure the hotels stay full. ( of which the ruling class likely own?) Looks good on tourism statistics and also easier to tax the hotel but harder to tax the airbnb guy. I used airbnd a few years ago to stay in a condo in jomtien with the family. Worked out great but it was obvious it was some geezers fuckpad that he rented out whilst gone. Neighbours werent real friendly either as they could see we were a bunch of blow ins taking up space around the pool. Plus im not easy on the eye while wearing a pair of budgie smugglers and wallowing drunkenly in the pool.
