    Bicycles in Chiang Mai

Anyone know a good place to buy second hand bicycles in Chiang Mai ?
I want to send some down to my wife's village in Surin for the kids there, plus I want one for myself to ride around CM. Maybe a mountain bike.
My walking exercises and rehab have paid off, I am now walking up to 500mtrs straight without using the walking stick and the other day I had my first go riding a bike. It was easier than I thought it would be, considering only a few months ago I was using a wheelchair to get around.

Looking forward to riding down to and along the river road not far from where we live at Saraphee.

Relax, my Mother was Welsh. It was meant as a dig at another poster who used a similar signature insulting Aussies.

    Mickmac is this you.
Do you know this foreign bicycle thief - Chiang Mai police want a word

A Caucasian foreigner was caught on CCTV lifting an expensive bike from a shop in Chiang Mai while the owner was out to lunch.

The owner came back to his unguarded shop to find that a 15,000 baht bike had been pinched. And then checking CCTV found out the miscreant was a white guy.

The man is pictured looking the bike over as if he is going to buy it but when he realizes no one is in the shop he rides off on it and is said to have stashed it nearby before coming back later.

He had been caught on another camera parking about 200 metres from the shop on a motorcycle.

Mae Ping police said they are on his tail and think that the thief is still in the immediate area.

The video was featured on the Facebook page of "Tee Mee Chok Bike".

The story was featured on national television with the presenter saying "it is usually Thais doing the stealing but today we have a foreign thief".

The presenter urged the public to try and track him down and contact police.

    Yes, that was me.
(Wish it was, would love to be that age again)
Some of those bikes look a bit expensive for my liking, I am not after anything that flash.
Wonder if they caught this bandit ?

Back to the op. You could try mong cycles half way down chiang mai r.d,just before the junction to worrarot market. The shop's run by a Canadian guy and his wife .I'm sure he could sort you out with something suitable. Also just before his shop there is another thai run shop with lots of cheapies as well.

Thanks for that, will go into town tomorrow and have a look there.
Funny, I have been around and in CM for years but never had any interest in bikes until now and had no idea where to start looking.

If you happen to be going around Surin yourself they have hundreds of bikes at the Cambodian market just south of Surin. Inexpensive bikes, copies and the odd used gem from Japan.
Buy a decent one for yourself, you'll be glad you did. A good sturdy Hybrid is the best choice, please don't get anything with a "shock" on it unless your spending over 20,000.

The only reason I was going to buy them here was because we have a pick-up headed back to Surin empty, so I thought if I could buy them here and send them down there was more chance of the kids getting them. I am not going down myself, staying in CM.
Sending the cash down to buy them there is an option, but...................
