    Chiang Mai womens' Prison

well, they have taken all the prisoners away to the country, to the mens' prison in Mae Rim (the men have been moved to a new facility) and now the old buildings are throbbing with life and schoolkids

there used to be over 2300 inmates squashed in

I think there is a big Royal or minister coming too, to open the new venture, as roads are closed and police everywhere

but nobody is sure what the plan for the place is

    anyone know?

Never saw a bit of this driving down Narawat Bridge Road or Toon Hotel Rd today. Traffic is lighter in fact as it's Sunday.

No idea about any of this (first I've heard of it) but I expect that means that excellent little restaurant just opposite will be closed as well since it was staffed by day-release prisoners.

but there was no pic of the big cells with the sleeping platforms, the only thing I found interesting

    at the moment, yes

and thanks for that extra pic

they must have had about 30+ up top, and another 30 or more below; there is a separate cell at the end for some reason, altough it shares the facilities

Just popped in again for a nose around and a pic

one of the cells, just a great big room, all concrete

one of the sleeping cells, they must have crammed over 200 in at night

and the washing and toilet facilities

this was almost an art installation, I wish they would save it

    the row of personal lockers

each one has a different feel and pics from magazines; some were just lined with plain white paper

    another

    another

    quite amazing and also sad

How interesting, thanks for the pics Doc.

They should keep part of it as a museum.

I talked to one of the guys sitting around pretending to be a guard today

looks like they are going to demolish the whole shaboodle and build a mock up of the palace that used to be there, in the old days

    a new tourist must-see

a ridiculous idea but I am sure the Chinese groups will love it

If I had somewhere to put those lockers, I could make a great tourist site, and it is all original art

Wonder if they demolished the solitary confinement cells first.

Or perhaps those lockers are them.
