Various Chiang Mai Questions from an Old N00b

I have done some searching, but can't seem to find some answers to some of my special needs so thought I'd put it together in a post in the hope that some of y'all know the answers.

1. Does anyone know of a decent regular pickup basketball game?
2. Good quality bakery that makes heavy european style bread (dark) or decent rye bread.
3. Kosher dill pickles (real ones, sour).
4. Best steak in town (butcher and restaurant).
5. Best dim sum in town.
6. Corned beef or pastrami sandwich NY or Montreal deli style.

All the TEFlers and retirees in Chaing Mai live on somtum and noodle soup.
They couldn't afford a steak.

Surely half the attraction of moving to another country is finding out for yourself or discovering alternatives..

Not a Chiangmai resident but have been several time. Local friends take me to some good restaurants and food stores.

Best steak in town (butcher and restaurant).

Best? Who knows but I thought The Dukes was very good.

When you get to Duke's they have the best dill pickles I have tasted.

I had one of the better restaurant meals I have had in Asia at Dukes last week. A wonderful pizza, a nice big Ceasar salad, big enough for four served with hot foccacio bread. a rack of great ribs, and a huge brownie delight. We as a family of 4 were well full. Plus a great pitcher of margaritas. A bit expensive, but a great meal

Last time I was in CM, went to a dimsum place not far from city center. I thought it was good. It was called, Toey Dimsum.

2) Good bread at Rim Ping Supermarket. You may have to try more than one rim ping before you find what you want though as the standard of baking is not consistent between all branches.

One of the most expensive restaurants in CM, though.


5) Dim Sum. Yangzi Jiang on Nimmanhaemin Road, great food, lousy service.
Jasmine Dim Sum, Royal Princess Hotel, Chiang Klan Road
Fujian Restaurant. Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Great food, ferociously overpriced.

6) This guy. Excellent home-made pastrami.

Well...I have lived in Thailand before and been to Chiang Mai numerous times, speak and read Thai, blah blah blah. One of the big attractions for us is that it's the first "civilized" place we've lived together as a family - civilized meaning having a lot of Western amenities and stuff. And so there's not so much of a thrill in trolling western supermarkets etc. to try to find things, as simply wishing to know where it is so we can go buy it.

And there is no alternative to a good kosher dill pickle, in my opinion.

I went to the Rimping on Hwy 121 but sadly no dill pickles there. And the bread wasn't what I was looking for, but based on the other poster it would seem I need to check into some other branches. Thought there would surely be a western-run bakery by some old German fellow with a lifetime's experience in baking heavy bread, but I guess not if nobody has ever heard of one.

Thanks for the recommendations, sounds like Duke's is a must-go for food and in the never-ending search for the perfect pickle. Although reading through the other threads, seems it's quite easy to get yourself into one.

the UN Irish does lots of types of bread, very good too

unlike most bakeries though, they don't get up early to start the bread, so there is no point in going there before 11am

They surely do.Sandy the owner was considering opening up full bakery next door.

well, there is no bread before around 10.30 and the full selection much later

if he does open a proper bakery that would be excellent...as long as they get up early so there is bread (and croissants) ready from 9.00 am
