    Ayutthaya Weekend Trip Pics

In February 2008, I took the train from Bangkok to Ayutthaya, Thailand. I had wanted to visit this old Siam capital since the first time I had come on a holiday to Thailand back in December of 2005, but never got around to it.

It was tough trying to get on the train because I had two huge suitcases with me. I had left Korea at the end of my teaching contract, to tour through SEAsia for three months. My first stop was Thailand, and also my last stop.

View from my seat, and one of my big pink suitcases that took up a whole seat.

I had planned on meeting a friend I had met on ajarn (forum), and he was going to show me around a bit. Upon arrival, I booked in advance at the Baan Lotus Guesthouse.

The guesthouse cost me 800 baht, for an air-conditioned double bed room. As you can see it is made of teakwood. Anywhere you walked in the place it squeaked, but it was very quaint and quiet.

The day after I arrived, I awoke to a beautiful sunny day. My friend picked me up on his motorbike, and we went on a tour of some of the temples in the area. What a historical UNESCO world heritage city!

    Wat Yai Chaimonkorn

    The Reclining Buddha

Chedi at Wat Phu Khao Thong

    The Ancient Ruins
    Wat Phra Si Sanphet

I ran into quite a few elephants on the street giving tours. In fact, I nearly got trampled on by one of them while crossing the street.

My tour guide took me on a riverboat dinner cruise that evening. The food was great, and the views were okay (it was hard to see much though). There was a bit of a drag show on board which was a hoot to see.

Before we went on the boat, we saw guys cooking huge lobsters and prawns. We ordered a bunch of huge prawns to eat, yummy!

About to board the boat cruise.

Hello there, big prawn..you are about to be eaten!

I'm not quite sure of the name of this, but it was very spicy. I think I drank ten quarts of water and beer to cool my mouth down.

The food and drink were relatively cheap. It cost about $30.00 for the meal and quite a few drinks. I was impressed.

I really got a kick when they brought ice with my Singha beer. Who drinks ice with beer?? I guess they do that in Thailand.

The view as we are taking off from the shore. The sun was quickly going down.

The infamous drag show where a group of girls wearing dresses, wigs, and white makeup started singing western songs by beyonce, and parading around the guests. It was the funniest thing i've seen in awhile.

All in all, I really enjoyed Ayutthaya, and was happy I finally took a quick trip up there. It was nice to see the temples there before I headed to Angkor Wat not too long after that.

They don't look much different to the girls whose pictures you post in the bargirl threads.

No, I'm not sure if they were girls. They could of been ladyboys for all I know. They were changing in the girls room though.
One girl/boy stuffed herself so she looked like Dolly Parton.

^Yes, that's the name. Thanks.. I have so many pics to share. I was crying after one bite. Although, compared to Korean food, Thai food is tame.

Ayutthaya is a wonder place to visit and take pics. Nice pics by the way. But about the hotness of the foods, then I suggest that you have not yet had some of the spicy Issan style prepared foods or even possibly the Thai foods made in the home for non-tourists. The hots of Thai and Kor are different than each other and often one may be tolerant of one when the hotness of the other is vertually unbearable. Having been an Expat myself living in Kor for a total of 17 years since 1972 has probably helped build up my tollerance to hotness of the Kor foods. Same for the Thai wife who has built up an immunity to the Kor hot foods. As for the Thai foods, there is still an occasion when there are Thai get togethers that I am unable to eat the Issan prepared Sam Tom. Ciao!

Thanks everyone for the comments, and the green.

No, I haven't been to Isaan or eaten home-made Thai food. Yes, Korean and Thai hotness are totally different. As you may know, Koreans put red pepper paste on everything. Korean food is very bland after awhile. Thai food has more of a variety of flavour, and uses a number of herbs and spices. No comparison really. I prefer Thai spicyness. Although, I'm more used to the Korean hot pepper and kimchi taste. Cheers!

Also agreed. Particularly with a bit of ice on a hot day. I reckon you can drink more when you put ice in. You seem to get less dehydration.

Ew, watered down beer. That took some getting use to. Back in Canada, we use a sleeve to keep our beer cool (not ice).

    Thanks for the comments.

I think you meant to say Korean food is tame. It's about as spicy as a cheese sandwich.

As I said earlier, Korean food has a very hot red pepper sauce. I find Thai food spicy, but more tasty. Have you tried Korean food?

So is the food spicy, or is it the sauce that you can choose to put on it that's spicy? There's a difference.

I've always found Korean food bland, which is why I rarely eat it.

Having worked with Koreans for most of my time here, take a guess.

The best kimchi was made by one of the Thai maids. The Korean family moaned that it was too spicy. I have eaten Korean food more times than I care to remember both at Korean homes and in many restaurants and I have never eaten anything that could be considered more than 'mildly spicy', and no; I'm not a macho spicehead. I ate raw prik kee nuu once and it nearly killed me.

^I guess everyone has a spicyness factor and can eat so much of it. I guess I wouldn't fare well with some of the hotter foods in Thailand. I do think Thailand food has way more variety, and taste (spice), than Korean food. It's making me hungry just thinking about it.

Yes, it is the sauce they put on everything that is gross. I am getting used to the spicyness to an extent, but I find even kimchi too spicy. Maybe I'm just a wuss. I don't like overly spicy food, as it gives me heartburn.
