It would appear that mining is NOT on the list of prohibited trades foreigners can engage in. However in the same breath, that would then mean you'd need a work permit to do it.

I'd bet if you showed up somewhere with a dredge and started running it or even showed up with a hand-pan that thaiz would come outta the woodwork! I doubt it'd be long before you were given up to the authorities.. Then again I could be wrong..

    OFF TOPIC:
FWI: Here's a list of things you can't do here.

So scratch, making rice paper by hand, making shoes or hats, typesetting thai and hand rolling cigarettes right off your list of things to do here for money.

    I doubt it.

If any falang thinks that he would be able to pan for gold undisturbed by locals and then walk away with any gold he found, whatever the law may or may not proscribe, then he is undoubtedly barking mad.

...and then there are the numerous [past and present] Farang that have secured some sort of business, employment, income derived activities, etc all under the radar for years without incident and regulations enforced - regardless of the officialdom in place.

Selling noodles off a cart, doing part time english teaching out in the sticks, and helping the in laws at harvest time are quite different to taking gold out of the earth. Thai earth. Earth that is the birthright of every Thai.

Do you really think a falang could independently pan for gold here and just walk away with an ounce or two.

Now MAYBE, just maybe a foreigner with a thai significant other who has land (in a gold bearing area) could indeed mine it small scale, under the radar.

    BUT

As boastful as the thaiz are in their endless games of "one-up-man-ship", or "LOOK! We're better than you!!", I doubt it'd last very long before some official from the Ministry of Silly Walks would show up with his hand out.

Searching YouTube for gold panning/mining in thailand does return a few interesting videos..

I sincerely wish all you wanna-b-gold-minerz good luck...!!

Quite close to the reality, Toddly...
Any such Farang [or Thai, for that matter] venture would have to be highly clandestine - for the circle of problems that might develop.

In a round about way, the "golddigging" business is highly competitive.

Gold mining, fck that in Thailand, that's women's work, they dig into the deep pockets of Farang, who have gold fever, nuggets, of pure gold.
Thai Lady, pan for gold nuggets all day long, back breaking work panning for gold in a golden years sit com.
