Sap Chom Phu Arboretum , Petchabun.

On a recent trip to Wichien Buri we had a day to spare so took a short drive up the road to just past Bung Samphan where off on the left of the road is the small national park of Sap Chom Phu. On the map its marked as an arboretum but in reality when you arrive its just a pretty ordinary looking bit of jungle with labels on the trees. Still , not much else to see around these parts so worth an hour or two of exploring especially as its free.

As you pull into the car this is the scene












Yes, as you might have noticed from the signs, in the rainy season the waterfall here looks something like this :




But this was not the rainy season so we weren't expecting to see too much water. In fact on the day in question it was 42 C in the shade and felt every degree of it.

By the entrance its possible to order food and as the 3 girls were already a bit peckish a plate of Som dtam was ordered which was eaten by the side of a large pond. Nice place for a picnic.





Thus fortified we were ready for the short hike up the trail to see how much water was left in the falls.










I like trees as a rule but I'm not on intimate terms with any and can never remember their names. An exception to the rule was this one as it frequently appears in my coffee and other sweets.




Pushing further up the trail and already sweating like pigs it was clear that there was not going to be a spectacular rush of water anywhere






Pity that as it probably looks very pretty in full flow.












At the top of the400 metre trail what would ususlly be the top of the falls come into view
















So a bit disappointing after such a hot climb but if you are in this part of the country at the end of the rainy season it would make a pleasant enough day trip.
Back at the bottom we were too fagged out to walk the lesser trails as market on this map






But we'll probably come again in December and check them out then

The week before had been Songkran so you can imagine the mess the place was in after that ! Luckily for us they had just finished cleaning the place up with the help of a few local volunteers.

^Nice job volunteers. Need to find them and hire them away from Thailand's Parks and Recreation Division. Perhaps clean up the roadsides in to and out of Bangkok?
