A few words of warning about Pnomh Tamao:

It's a fair trek out of town, and the last bit is a long dirt track road full of beggars, so take a taxi not a tuk tuk.

The park itself is pretty big and not particularly well laid out. It's actually a rescue centre rather than a zoo, but they do encourage their own organised tours which are probably better to be honest, although pricey (but for a good cause). On their tours they will come and collect you.

    Wildlife Tours ? Wildlife Alliance

    I enjoyed it.

    Thanks for this info.
I will try to find more info on the internet about these parks, and visit some of these water parks with our daughter. She loves to swim and I hope that she will have fun there.
While I will do my parental job (as being a good father,...), I am sure that the misses will spend all her holiday money on the local markets in Phnom Penh....
And in the evening she will be tired from the shopping; our daughter will be tired from the swimming and I will have all the time of the world to check out the nightlife in PP "Riverside, here I come,...."
seem to remember some of the markets are worth a wander round.

Anyway, this might have some ideas (my reservations about the first two are already give):

Not sure you need protection - the Russians that gave the market its name are long gone.

I was going to post a picture but found a nice site that might help the OP:

    https://www.travelfish.org/sight_pro...phnom_penh/317

There's a big list of sights down the page.

Strongly advised NOT to take an 11 year old to either of those.

    Seriously.
Absolutely. Plenty of time to learn about those kind of atrocities later in life.

    Ridiculous suggestion.
There will not be a better opportunity to learn about communism..
    What?
The Khmer Rouge had more in common with the Green Party than the Communists

Personally I liked Phnom Phen as it reminded me about Bangkok and how it was 30 years ago.

I was lucky as I was guided by some great people who took me around the city, booked me into a lovely hotel on the River and introduced me to some fantastic people.

One place that really moved me was Tuol Sleng or S21, Pol Pot's school of torture.

I did show my 12 year old daughter some pictures when I returned home and although horrified she realized how lucky she was.

Would I take her to see that sad side of history...............If she wanted to see it I would take her but would prepare her mentally first and to brace herself.

Otherwise the markets and such are pretty much the same you see in any major Thailand city.

    .
I can still vividly remember standing in the grounds of Tuol Sleng. I could not finish going around the buildings with my friends, the place was simply evil.

Our kids are fortunate in that they have many years before the realities of mans inhumanity to man need to be bought home to them.

    Let them enjoy their innocence.

The Independence Hotel in Sihanoukville had a very eerie presence to it, despite being fully modernised and set in lush grounds and the walk down to the beach there was a very unsettling experience, I just didn't want to hang around.

Turns out it was the local detention, torture and execution centre during that period, which i didn't learn until a few days later drinking with some expats. Do I believe in ghosts..? No, but there was something about that place, the locals certainly do and won't go near the place if they can help it.

It was an interesting if somewhat melancholic note to my trip there that for Cambodians the horror of that period is only a few generations past and it still has an impact on their psyche.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

I got pick-pocketed and shot at with an air-gun in a drive-by shooting when I went to Phnom Penh. True story.

Don't think I'll return there again, much less so with kids in tow. Also true story.

Harrowing experience isn't it. The friend I went with couldn't finish going around the buildings either, quit about halfway through. He didn't explain why and I didn't need to ask.

Unfortunately I also something grotesque in another manner whilst there: some young tourist chaps walking around with their shirts off, drinking beer, and basically being loud and obnoxious. Utter, utter fuckheads.

It's not funny, I had an uncle who died at Belsen.

He fell out of the guard tower.

You seem to be a little bit obsessed with this shit, even if you don't appear to really understand it.

Did a communist molest you as a child?
