    Fishfarm building

    Dear Fellow Forum Members!

I would like to set up a fishfarm in Cambodia near Kampong Cham as a hobby project. fish for food! so guess catfish or snapper or tilapia or so..

the size of the hole is:
    6 meters wide
    13 meters long
    2 meters deep.

this was an old pont where the locals just let the water rot in there.
now in dry season it is totally dry and 0 water in there.

The problem is there are crabs who make holes and fish.. and thus can easily escape.
so which material should I use to close this pond? Concrete/cement?? or certain strong plastic?

I would like to have a pump for good water quality and O-2 oxygen

I hope there are any fellow members here who have some time to explain me how to do it or even help me doing it.

I would like to do it properly so also checking PH and other quality.

In return I can help with your pond or project as well. I have a car so can easily drive around.

if people think a pond size like I have won't make any profit please also let me know. Any info is welcome!

setting up Aquaponics could also be possible.. if that is what you guys recommend.

There was a poster on here by the name Tsicar. We also used to drink together in the village. He farmed, sort of, catfish. Anyways, he used to do what you are intending to do. He had one big problem and that was that he had to buy in fingerlings which took away profit. To cut it short he managed to fertilize eggs and get his own fingerlings. He had it sorted but new immigration laws in 2006 saw his return to S Africa.
Now if I recall he did do a few post on here regarding catfish farming etc. So may be you could go into 'Members List' and read his old posts? A very knowledgeable man. Good luck.

To the OP, another member; discusfarm would be quite knowledgeable about the subject. Though he hasn't been around for a long time.

Sounds like your pond will be kinda small. I'd guess you need at least double that to make any $.
What is your water supply? The dry season is wicked dry lately.

I'd consider planting something both flood and drought resistant like some gigantic bamboo strains, and possibly developing a nursery for the saplings.

The demand for construction bamboo will increase in the future and it is a much lower capitol/labor investment.

When I live n Thailand I live on a Thai run Fish and Prawn/Shrimp Farm.

One thing we do as Westerners, faced with Farming in Thailand is that we throw money at a problem. Rarely do I read of us (Westerners) having a profitable farming enterprise.

From what I observe, Thais make money by keeping things very simple, sometimes cutting corners that we (in the west) would never do and, in the case of Fish Farming, utilising feed sources that we would never think of.

Plus they supplement their income. Where we are, the majority of the Farmers also grow and harvest prawns.

Talapia or Pla Nin has a fingerling to harvest growing time of around 9 months in these parts (Central Thailand).

Prawns have about a 3 month harvest time. So you can get 3 lots of cash flow, usually used to buy fish food in that 9 month period.

So, just focusing on the Prawns for a moment. They don't need 'extra' feeding. They are 'bottom' feeders and scavenge what food they can that filters down from the upper layers of the pond.

The Fish and Prawn Farm where I live (when I'm in) in Thailand.

How do Thai's 'cut corners' and save money. Well, one way is that they treat 'safety' differently from how we do in the West. To catch the prawns, they simply put a one way net in the pond and hang an light bulb above it and harvest the prawns in the morning.

That light bulb is fed electricity by a bare wire attached to bamboo poles around the ponds edge. You touch the wire, while it's live, you probably die. They save money by not running the much more expensive insulated wiring, same as you have in the house.

The Prawns are only grown in the Ponds with the Pla Nin, not with the Catfish.

One thing to note to the OP, and maybe something you have not thought about.

Any decent size pond will attract the attention of the Local Thais. They will wait patiently till the Harvest is almost ready, then sneak in during the night and simply help themselves.

Many an unsuspecting Western Farmer/Hobbyist have lost their hard earned this way.

At the Farm we grown Talpia, Catfish, sometimes the 'Big Head Carp' which the Thais only really make their flesh into fishcakes apparently, the White Prawn/Shrimp and the much larger Blue Claw Prawn/Shrimp.

Happy to answer an specific questions you have, though my knowledge in Catfish is a bit limited as they arn't a big part of the Farm's income.

Thanks a lot for the input so far! very happy to read that thanks!

wow so shrimp grows much faster? and I guess is also worth more.. would Shrimp only be good? or best to mix it with some fish..

do you have any estimate how many fish or what kind of profit I could see from a small pond that I am planning? ofcourse it will depend on my water and ph and all the other things.. but lets say if I do it fairly good..

Shrimp only is difficult, as you would need to feed them.

I'll try and say this tactfully ...

The Farmer feeds the Fish and the Fish, through their offcasts, feed the Prawns (shrimp).

The depth of your pond @ 2 metres is a bit deep as the sunlight will be difficult to filter so low.

My honest advice is to forget any notion of making any money for your venture, have some fish in the pond just for your personal needs.

I'll send you a PM with a link that might interest you.
