Just wondering if someone could point me in the right direction for the best currency to use in PP. I fly from DM, should I get some US$ at the airport or use an ATM in PP? Will they accept Baht? Thanks

The ATM spits out $USD in Cambodia , best to bring a couple of hundred with you in small denominations though, 5 and 10 dollar notes. Must of the fookers cringe when you hand them a $100 bill, trying to negotiate with them in riel is just a waste of time
most of them counterfeit I'm guessing....Originally Posted by beerlaodrinker
Never had a problem with them. Pretty bizarre though to find a country that refuses to use its own currency.
I read somewhere that something like 80% of the US currency there is counterfeit.Originally Posted by beerlaodrinker

Turkey used to be like that. I remember leaving a five million lira tip for a beer and a sandwich.
There was a point where the rate changed so much they wouldn't even take Lira in the airport/duty free, etc.
USD are used extensively in Cambodia. Smaller Bills are best. Yes they take Thai Baht, especially near border Areas like Siem Reap & Sihanoukville.
Never faced that problem.Originally Posted by CSFFan
ATM's everywhere. Foreign cards USD5 charge so better withdraw larger amounts, but some banks/atms limit how much you can withdraw. Withdraw any amount less than full hundreds so you get small notes. Like 295 or 195 if that's not possible.
When Thailand started to turn to shit (Hey Mil Ju-), I got bank account and international credit card without charge for withdrawals. Business visa and some money required. Modern internet banking included.

Riel is good for paying motodops 2k (dollar=4k riel). You get Riel in change when you buy something in shops.
100 dollar bills are a problem and not accepted except in banks where they scan them.
Thanks to all that posted. I have a Thai bank ATM card. Would that work and how is the rate compared to buying dollars in Bkk? Thanks again.
I never once had a problem with the bundle of 100's I took with me except where there was literally not enough change to in the till. 50's and 20's are OK.
When I was in PP the hotel we stayed at (and other places) would only accept USD and only in mint condition which was pretty annoying. They even tried to reject a $100 note because it was dog-eared until I suggested that they could either take that or get fecked.
That was a whiles back now though so things may have changed.
never got a bad $10, 20, 50 or 100 bill in Cambodia since i have been traveling there
when u use the atm withdraw $290, or about and u get smaller bills as well as 100's
I put thai baht in my scb here in Thailand and gf's mom withdraws $$ with the atm card at an atm in Cambodia
service fee is 100 baht /withdrawal and the exchange is quite good.
Most money changers will change thai baht to $$
that's wrong, Riel is accepted everywhere , I use it all the time, sometimes even change over a few hundred bucks just to get 1million riel in my pocket
riverside area gives a shit rate on Baht, need to change that in the market areas, or get us in thailand first, imo
Yes, I know it's accepted but why would you want to run around with a shitload of the stuff when they all seem to want to quote in dollars anyway. Riels a pain in the arse
handy for small purhcases, esp motodops and tuk tuk rides, bottles of water,etc....
I've heard that dollars and Thai Baht are accepted, yet U.S. money should be crisp and clean, practically laundered (bad pun). Can't recall whether it was Cambo or Myanmar, but $100 bills were supposed to have a series of #s too.
I found in PP and the tourist areas you can use US Dollars and Thai baht but you get your change in reil. God only knows if they are giving you back the right amount so just try and hand over as near the price as possible
The biggest riel is 20K & I'm getting a lot more of them as change since the $ has risen. It's 4100R/$1 or so & they'll give you change at 4000/1. They make like 2 cents on every $.
There's no reason to change into riel. I understand it's a common scam at the border for touts to tell travelers that they have to change into riel and that the rate is 3000 riel = $1.
