The current form of Thai integration is to go and learn Muay Thai, it seems that almost every friend of mine is doing this, seems pretty sad. I really can't stand westerners who compete to be more Thai than the next joe, in fact it really dicks me off and over the years has somewhat ruined what fear the Thai's had of us, they now all think we desperately want to be like them and therefore there is no need to respect us anymore. Temple going, monk tattoo wearing, muay thai training twats, have some self respect for where you came from and who you really are.

This guy obviously does not subscribe to TV! Change a few words and...Amat says that many expats first come to Cambodia as tourists with an idealised picture of the country’s people and its natural beauty, leading to unrealistic expectations when they decide to settle here over the long term.
“When they just visit as a tourist, Cambodia is like what they saw in postcard, a beautiful country. When they decided to live, then they turn to the back of the postcard and they begin to face a lot of culture shock: bad traffic, poverty, beggars.”
Agreed, I simply use the phrase, socially un-evolved. Only very stupid people think people who are not white are naturally inferior and stupid and will never amount to anything. Not so, just slightly behind us in their social evolution, remember we used to fry people in man size pans
Anyone who has spent any time in the African bush working with local trackers, realizes that they are anything but inferior and stupid. They are masters of their culture.
I would love to be able to understand their conversations when they talk about how ignorant the Caucasian tourists are, when it comes to simply surviving for a couple of days in the bush.
Recognizing that different races can excel in different areas without any one race being superior or better would go a long way in solving many social problems.

Indeed. People who can wander around in the jungle and not die are much smarter than a brain surgeon or an aircraft designer or a biological scientist or [ad infinitum]

Especially when wondering around Thailand.

amen to that.
Westerners complain because foreigners set up cultural ghettos in the west.
Many foreigners do exactly the same in Thailand, Cambodia etc. Thing is we all enjoy home comforts when away from home.
Do not make the mistake of advertising this as multi culturalism. It is just a collection of multiple cultures.
Ethnic minorities in a foreign country will only settle if they feel secure, and they are not under threat. Thailand is a very insecure, corrupt third world country despite its ambition to the contrary.
There is a huge difference between multiculturalism and multiple cultures.

My folks lived in India for over a decade, but they weren't out shitting in the street with the locals. Why would you?
Neither were the locals who had their income level. Why would they?Originally Posted by English Noodles

"Learned out of necessity" .. and that my friend, is what I believe is the key.
Nature rewards the ones who get it right, and kills off the ones who can't (or won't) acquire the necessary skillsets.
So who is to say, which group of survivors is "superior" to the other?
Certainly not me.

Without the necessary supporting infrastructure, a brain surgeon, an aircraft designer, and a biological scientist are pretty much useless (like a farrier living in a land without horses).
And being "smarter" is not the same thing as having advanced training and education. Many people manage to get through advanced training (including medical school) without being smart (and likewise there are a lot of extremely smart people who have little or no formal education).

I think common sense has to enter into your logic. There are a lot of book smart people that have zero common sense.
I would rather work with a not so learned person, in most situations, that has great common sense.

OK, they're smarter than us if we all lived in the Stone Ages. As we don't, you're talking bollocks as usual.Originally Posted by RickThai
Can't argue with you on that point. I've seen some really smart people with advanced degrees that have absolutely no common sense.
One guy I know, who is actually very smart and a very successful electrical/software engineer, once mentioned that "destroying all the roads" was one of the best things people in the USA could do to increase the quality of their lives".
The fact that he could never visit his parents again (they lived a thousand miles away) or take his son to the hospital in case of an emergency, never occurred to him until I pointed out some major flaws in his thinking.
Good point.

I know quite a few guys who are in Cambodia and none are into the kiddie thing. In fact they deride such people just as happened here. There has also been a crackdown and one could easily land in prison. That habit is mostly reserved for the locals now.
Most of the guys I know are in Cambodia because of the easy and cheap visa, lack of hassle in that you can walk in and work without a permit, own a business - everything but own property or marry if you're over 50.
Many people there teach English. Many are retired. Just like Thailand, many drink and hang around bars and girls.
The sleaziest expats? Depends on who you hang out with. They can be found in both places IMHO.
Cheers.
