Didn't know all that about Cambodia. It almost sounds more interesting than Thailand, but not quite. It probably does not have the same infrastructure for banking, roads or health care that Thailand has.

My only real complaint about Thailand is all the silly visa regulations. I guess if it were easy everyone would live in Thailand versus Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

Most of the guys I know are in Cambodia because of the easy and cheap visa, lack of hassle in that you can walk in and work without a permit, own a business - everything but own property or marry if you're over 50.

Many people there teach English. Many are retired. Just like Thailand, many drink and hang around bars and girls.

The sleaziest expats? Depends on who you hang out with. They can be found in both places IMHO.

I know I am not the only one to have spent time in other countries, but you will never be accepted as one of them because you are a foreigner. I have always treated people the same, which is with respect if I am in their country. It is how I would like to treated by others who visit my country. But, they will never be like an American because their culture prevents that.

Do Thais or Cambodians really care if you are trying to talk in their language? I don't think so as long as you are not working in their country and taking jobs. I have circled the world a few times and found things to be very similar with regard to how you are treated. If you respect others, they will normally respect you and you don't have to speak their language for this to happen.

How much you get "involved" with the culture around you is an individual decision. There is no right or wrong way to live in a foreign country. It will always be foreign, so how much effort you put forth is up to you. Personally, I do not try to engulf myself with things going on around me. I take it all in and go to functions I want to see and don't go if I am not interested. I do not go because "it is the right thing to do."

Enjoy your stay in whatever country you choose, but never believe you will be looked upon as anything other than a foreigner.
I would have to agree, it is alright going to a foreign country and maybe staying there for a few years but you can never really live there simply because you don't belong there. Given the chance I would like to live in a different country or countries and learn the languages of those places, but that's just me not that I ever get the chance.

7 Ways Cambodia Can Solve its Foreign Dude Problem
    31 December 2013

Oh crap, it happened again. Just yesterday, Cambodian police announced that they are searching for a 48 year-old British man in connection with the presumed murder of a Cambodian woman. Apparently, the suspect fled his hotel in quite a haste after allegedly killing a “lady visitor” and stuffing her dead body under his bed.

The details of this particular incident may be revolting, but sadly, the report of a Westerner being implicated in a crime in Cambodia is no longer surprising at all.

Hardly a day goes by now without a sensational article in the local press about a Western lowlife engaging in some embarrassing or criminal behavior that seems to cast all foreign visitors to Cambodia in a negative light.

But if you read those news articles and you take just a cursory look at the Western meth heads, burnouts, booze hounds, bums, and beggars wandering the streets of Phnom Penh, you will quickly realize that Cambodia doesn’t have a general problem with “foreigners” causing trouble in the country.

Cambodia has a specific problem with foreign men.

Think about it. Foreign women don’t flee criminal charges in their home countries and move to Cambodia to buy sex from teenagers, abuse drugs and alcohol, molest orphans, and assist suicides in Kampot.

    Foreign men do that.

You never see local newspaper photos of a crazy foreign woman setting fire to her apartment building while wearing only a Speedo.

You don’t read about foreign women in Cambodia glassing bargirls, stealing Wild Turkey from supermarkets, strangling Vietnamese prostitutes, or setting up fake charities to get access to vulnerable garbage dump kids. Foreign men in Cambodia do that.

You rarely see foreign women driving drunk and killing Khmers or hopping around ancient temples with their peckers hanging out. If a Cambodian hotel owner rents a room to a foreign woman, he can be relatively confident that she’s not going to smash up the hotel, burglarize the other rooms, or leave a dead hooker under the bed.

As far as I know, Cambodian police have never arrested any Western women for stealing cars,
dealing drugs, raping masseuses, robbing banks, sodomizing beggar kids, cutting off the thumbs of local thieves, or wrapping their dead roommates in tarp and sleeping with their decomposing bodies. Western men in Cambodia get arrested for that stuff. Pretty often.

Do you know what else foreign women almost never do in Cambodia? Die.

Okay, every now and then you may hear about a drug overdose by a honeymooning bride, but that’s quite rare.
Self-destructive foreign men, on the other hand, bite the dust in Cambodia with alarming frequency. They jump from buildings and leap from bridges. They hang themselves, stab themselves, shoot themselves, and drink themselves to death.

British Man Sought for Murder of Phnom Penh Woman
    Monday, 30 December 2013 2:42 pm
Phnom Penh: The body of a Cambodian woman was discovered under the bed of a room at the Bolina Palace Hotel, located at 8 – 9 -10 B, Street 154, Psar Tmey 3 Commune, Daun Penh District. An English tourist who had been renting the room where the body was found is being sought for her murder.

The 2 staff members who made the discovery told police that a British national named ‘Green Stuatiajames’ (Stuart James Green?), a 48 year old male, holding passport 107259199, with a Cambodian visa entry date stamped 19th June, 2013 had starting renting room 309 on the 3rd floor from the 25th of December, 2013.

On the 28th of December, at 11:45 pm, the British national had come downstairs alone and asked staff for his passport back because he needed to withdraw money from the bank to pay for his room. Once he was given back his passport, the British man did not return.

At 1:30 pm on the 29th of December, 2013, staff, whose suspicions were aroused, used a spare key to check his room, where they found the dead woman.

The victim was found naked and an examination revealed several slash marks about her throat. Police have not yet been able to identify the victim, who was described as slender, dark-skinned and 1.53 meters in height.’

Police are currently searching for the British national, described as the suspect, but he may already have fled the country.

    Australian King Kong arrested

Shaven-headed Australian Expat Arrested in Phnom Penh

Tuol Kork and Daun Penh military police arrested an Australian man, a មេខ្លោង (kingpin) known for supplying drugs to the expat community along the riverside in Phnom Penh.

The arrest was made at 10:00 am on the 20th December, 2013, at the rented house where the Australian was staying, located on Street 110, Wat Phnom Commune, Daun Penh District.

A Daun Penh military police official identified the Australian suspect as ‘Alan Rolf Jensen,’ known by the monicker គីងកុង (King Kong), born 1964, and holding passport #M7043607.

He stated that the arrest followed several days of police surveillance, and that military police had seized a quantity of drugs and drug paraphernalia at the suspect’s house at the time of his arrest, which was conducted in unison with the deputy prosecutor of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, Mr. Meas Chunpiseth.

The Daun Penh military police official stated that the suspect had been come to the attention of police for frequenting and supplying illicit drugs at foreigner bars and hangouts along the riverside in Phnom Penh.

Manhunt on for suspect in slashing

    Wed, 1 January 2014
Police have begun a nationwide manhunt for a British national suspected of slashing the throat of a still-unidentified young Cambodian woman found dead under his bed in a Phnom Penh guesthouse on Sunday, said Lieutenant Colonel Mom Sitha of the capital’s foreigner police.

Suspect Stuart James Green, 47, is still thought to be in country after fleeing his hotel Saturday night, Sitha said.

“We have also sent his name, photo and a copy of his passport to all our immigration police checkpoints and other relevant police at Cambodian international airports, and at the borders of Thailand, Laos and Vietnam,” Sitha stated.

and some classic reporting in UK's Daily Mail, where they threw in some pics of Angkor Wat as well . . . looks a nice 'resort'

Phnom Penh is where the alleged crime took place. So why a photo of Ankor Wat which is far away from the crime scene.
As for border control, oh yes just come to Poi Pet,it is only the Europeans going through passport control and paying.
Thousands of Thai and Cambodians walking freely through,no checks for them.
If you really wanted to be like a local, just by pass the border post and walk over one of the many pathways that link each country.
Oh so it is only Foreign men that commit crimes in Cambodia. Wow,it,s only Blacks who commit crimes in London. Oh but You cannot say that.

Manhunt ends; police say body that of suspect
    Fri, 10 January 2014

Police confirmed yesterday that the body of a foreigner found in a Phnom Penh guesthouse on Monday was indeed that of Stuart James Green, the British national suspected in the killing of a young Cambodian woman late last month.

Municipal Police official Mom Sitha said yesterday that representatives of the British embassy had confirmed Green’s identity – without commenting on his possible involvement in the crime, but officials at the embassy were unavailable yesterday to confirm Sitha’s statement.

“The embassy has not said that the dead [man] was involved with the death of the young woman, but authorities [still] suspect him, because he broke a window and killed himself with the broken glass,” Sitha said.

Police had been searching for Green since the naked body of an unidentified Khmer woman was found with its throat slashed under the bed in his room. Green had collected his passport and left the night before.

As far as I'm concerned, the Cambodian authorities are not hard enough on the white trash. If criminals want to ply their trade in this country, they should be exploited to the nth degree.

Never been to Cambodia but will in the future for visa runs, etc. Was going to make long weekends of it and do the touristy bit. Plenty of women available where I live if you want HIV (Jomtien). From this thread so far it sounds like Cambodia is for kiddie fiddlers and gangsters. Safety sounds a concern. Yet, from other forums people live there and have peaceful lives.Sounds a bit of a conundrum.

People living expat lives especially the retired expats. I work offshore and would be liable for UK tax. You could live in Jomtien on a much cheaper budget than the UK believe me I have priced it out. If you go whoring your costs will escalate. Or, get married and buy a house and get ripped. Happens too often.

In Thailand the expat was once welcomed whereas now we are tolerated. As a norm we have very little in common with the natives. So form small ghetto's of like minded. That happens anywhere in the world. We generally come with mucho $$ in our arse pocket and will attract the girls who want to better themselves. Why not. Would you want their life.

The low lifes in Cambodia. Can't comment as have not been there. I am referring to the expats not the locals as I am sure there are plenty of them around. We have them in Jomtien too. Best to mind your own buisness and steer clear. I avoid the two millionaires on holiday like the plague. Any scrapes I have been in has been with foreigners pissed up not the natives.

Would be good to see some threads from expats who have perhaps in a LTR or married to a girl who has lived their for a number of years and can tell both sides.

Be wiley of those who are superficially literate yet find dichotomy on the one hand paradoxical and on the other a Janus-headed polymorphic melange, in fact a Khmer chameleon called Ann Athema.I've no doubt you will find like minded playmates.

OK I'm posting from Cambodia and this is my personal opinion:

Any whitey that lives here full time is fucking mental.

Give these people a sniff of an opportunity and they will take it because they're too dumb to think of the consequences.

They will rip you off and come back for more; once is never good enough.

The motos/tuks tuks dress really smart but still somehow manage to look like a bag of shit that's been pulled through a hedge.

They drive beside you and say "Marijauna, boom boom lady?" and I think..."of course I'd like to smoke a joint and boom boom a lady but I don't want you to have anything to do with it you fucking freak, now go and annoy someone else."

Been traveling to Camboida since 2004 and I lived in there 2008-2009 and loved it, I go back at least 2x /year , driving in with my thai car an all around.

It is not for everyone but the Cambodians are some great friendly people and if your into History its a great place to travel.

Beaches so so ( islands are nice ) but not up to Thailand's standards,

Roads can be great to terrible ( the road form Siem Reap to Phnom Phen was great 4 years ago, now its shit)

food so so but you can get a good western meal for under $6.

Canadian Filmmaker/journalist Dave walker was found dead ( not known if it was murdered) nearly 10 weeks after he walked out of hs SR gh leaving his phone, laptop an passport behind. Another Cambodian Mystery

He was "abducted" about 2 months ago from his bedroom,

the FCCT had this open letter to PM Hussein etc... and then suddenly his body was found near a temple

Cambodia is a dangerous place, I suggest watching the epic movie, City of Gods
