The Thai Hotels Association President revealed that the hotel business situation in the country remains a high concern in the third quarter as less than 10 percent of occupancy was reported in currently opening hotels nationwide.

President Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi revealed the confidence index survey of more than 304 hotels across the country and that the occupancy rate is still very low as entrepreneurs were affected by the third wave of the Covid-19 situation.

20 percent of the operating hotels are suffering from a significant liquidity drop which could sustain the business for less than 3 months while 23 percent were only able to stay open for one more month, according to the survey.

Currently, 40.1 percent of hotels nationwide are operating as normal, 38.2 percent were offering some services, and 21.7 percent were temporarily closed. Only 12 percent of the surveyed hotels have hopes of opening in this quarter due to the worsening Covid-19 pandemic.

The President also expressed concern regarding the government’s country reopening plan within 120 days and urged the government to introduce a support plan for tourism and hospitality businesses if the country was unable to open the country as planned.

Meanwhile, Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn admitted that the domestic Covid-19 situation has tremendously affected the number of foreign tourists to not meet their targets.

Despite that, the government insists on moving forward with the 120-day opening plan to revive the economy by moving forward with the similar Phuket Sandbox and Samui Plus projects in other provinces.

“If Thailand can control the outbreak within 1-2 months, we believe that Covid-19 related foreign organizations would adjust our country in less dangerous areas, making tourists start to visit the country during the high season. The number of foreign tourists this year is expected to be just 1 million from the previous target of 3 million,” The Minister added.
