Thailand’s Only Exchange-Traded School Cuts Enrollment Target

    • SISB is 3% short of 2,900-students goal as recruitment hit
    • More Thais staying local helps offset drop in Chinese recruits

Thailand’s only exchange-listed school operator will fall short of its target enrollment in the new academic year as the coronavirus crimped foreign recruitment, though SISB Pcl has nearly met its goal by attracting more local students amid travel restrictions.

The company’s five campuses will have about 2,800 students at the start of the upcoming academic year, 3% less than a target of 2,900, said Chief Executive Officer Yew Hock Koh. Still, the tally will be up 6% from last year, with Thais accounting for 85% of students, he said.

“We’ve had some impact on our overseas recruitment plan, especially from China,” Koh said in an interview Friday. “The majority of our students are from the Thai community, which continues to have a lot of potential,” he said, noting that the “number of high-net-worth families continues to increase, boosting the need for international schools.”

SISB, originally called the Singapore International School of Bangkok, uses the curriculum of the city-state because of its reputation in mathematics and science, according to the company’s website. The average annual fee for a student is about 450,000 baht ($14,400), in the medium range compared with other international schools, Koh said.

The company is considering adding campuses in fast-growing Bangkok suburbs and nearby provinces to leverage its brand and tap Thai parents’ rising demand for international education, said Koh. It’s also spending 300 million baht to expand student capacity at an existing Bangkok facility by more than 60%.

Another expense is spending on disinfectants, sanitizers and sterilizers as part of health and safety measures amid the pandemic, he said.

SISB’s shares have dropped 6.8% this year, compared with a 16% slide in the benchmark SET Index.

Any relation to the SIS group in Indonesia? Money grubbing poor education factory, if so.

If only...; the few parents I have spoken with about school fees don't care how much they are because either their employer or their firm is paying the bill, while at the higher end some can probably afford to buy a school out of pocket change.

Fwiw, avg annual fees at a local intl with fine repo also run around 450k, so based on just that I can't see what's so super special about the SISB beyond having Singapore in it's name.

Education don't come cheap, but a great investment esp in 3W where gov schools (allegedly) do little more than keep kids off the street.

Thais accounting for 85% of students
This of course means that the tag 'International School' becomes pretty much meaningless, and is a damning indictment of the Thai education 'system'.

The next step when COVID does finally die down will probably be huge importation of overseas students on scholarships.

Those plans for more campuses will be long term ones. The organisation can trumpet 'plans' of just about anything.

Too low for any of the top tier in BKK. 1st grade starts at over 600,000 at most, topping out at over 900,00 for the end of high school.

Yeah, the grounds reflect that as pictured.

A cheaper regents, rather than any kind of competition for the top tier.

I can see why that could be a profitable niche.

A new international school near me is offering free tuition for 1 year plus 50% off for next year. I expect it to be almost entirely Thai with a smattering of Korean/Chinese.

They were smart enough not to give me an interview so maybe they do know what they're doing
I'd like to see what morning looks like
Don't wanna drink pint after pint
I wanna wake up without feeling sick
    But I can't cuz I'm a drug-abusing alcoholic

possibly, but if they take the piss, then parents wont join.

I just wonder how they guarantee that those parents don't join for 1 year or 2 years then nick off.

...don't underestimate the Thai-Chinese parents' fear that their kids won't get an education that can brighten their future...a few white faces, a few Singaporean-Chinese faces, a facsimile of a Brit/US curriculum, a few brightly colored brochures all go a long way...

It would be interesting to know in what aspect/s it is 'Singaporean'.

It seems to be quite a good selling point with Thai-Chinese.

Yeah, I was thinking that it wouldn't make much sense to be using 'a facsimile of a Brit/US curriculum'.

Thai Singapore International School uses the SG curriculum and intensity of learning. Basically pushes academic excellence over wellbeing..

The school offering discounts is a us curriculum I think.

Yes, I get that, and in 18 months there's a new (semi) international school offering all that with a 1 year waiver and 50% discount on the following don't underestimate the Chinese parents sense of getting a discount.
