    Bleak, Bleak, Bleak

Thailand Corporate Profit Outlook Is Bleakest in Southeast Asia
By Lee J Miller and Anuchit Nguyen
    April 20, 2020, 4:00 AM GMT+7
    Bloomberg/asia

    • Earnings estimates for Thai listed firms down 23% this year
    • Thai banks will start earnings season with results this week

Estimating and comparing companies’ results in the first quarter since the Covid-19 outbreak is more a guessing game than a science. By any measure, though, the outlook for Thailand Inc. is more bleak than for peers across Southeast Asia.

Earnings predictions for companies in the MSCI Thailand Index have been slashed by 23% on average so far this year, the biggest reduction among Southeast Asia’s five major stock markets, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. By contrast, the profit outlook for regional peers has been lowered in a range between 9.6% for the Philippines to 14.4% for Singapore. Analysts globally have been slow to adjust profit estimates as economic uncertainty mounts and a growing number of companies stop giving guidance.

“Thai corporate earnings estimates are likely to be reduced further with weak economic growth,” said Apichat Poobunjirdkul, a senior strategist at Tisco Securities Co. “The recent rebound for Thai equities is still very fragile because the Covid-19 outbreak is ongoing.”

The Thai market earlier this month rallied more than 20% from its recent low in March, putting it in bull territory, as investor optimism rose with the government’s economic stimulus measures and a slowing of new Covid-19 infections. But Thai stocks still haven’t fully priced in earnings-growth risk as there will likely be “significant” cuts in the consensus outlook, according to a UBS AG report published April 13.

The nation’s biggest lenders, including Siam Commercial Bank Pcl, Kasikornbank Pcl and Bangkok Bank Pcl, are scheduled to kick off earnings season this week when they report first-quarter results.

Certainly, numbers are all about the presentation

Now, as the Thai Market has rallied more than 20% it is a Bull Market.
Earnings estimates for Thai listed firms are down -23%
So simple arithmetic shows the Thai Market will suffer a -3% decline - beating the pants off its local competitors

Thailand's economy has been strained well before the Covid problem.

The currency, being protected by the Chinese Yuan has made things far more difficult for the export sector not to mention the tourism industry.

Implementing laws, which have always been there but rarely exercised has seen 100's of thousands of foreigners leave Thailand which has hurt the economy.

It may be a good time for those in power to look at things across the board and make the changes necessary to at least make Thailand more competitive with their Asian neighbours.

When the Thai economy starts up again a huge boost will be needed and changes are unavoidable whether the Chinese Thais like it or not.

    Just my 5 Baht's worth.

Wonder when the richest man (not) in Thailand will step in and lend a hand? It's not always easy being a Father.

...any published data to support this?...my impression is that many, if not most, foreigners resident in the swamp are too set in their ways to move somewhere else and, like the frog in increasingly hot water, will simply readjust their local situations and shelter in place...complaining loudly, of course, and threatening to flee, but unable to evacuate the trench they've dug for themselves...

Not off hand but I remember reading something in the Pattaya mail about 6 months ago that those were the estimates regarding foreign repatriations.

Personally I know hundreds of farang that have gone home because they could not afford to stay or could not meet the visa requirements.

^ You have any figures to dispute these figures lom?

And I am referring to all expatriates from all countries.

Just in my area 80% of the expats have disappeared over the last 2 years.

The numbers of expats on a non-O visa was around 150.000 in 2017 according to immigration stats so that 100's of thousands have left is pure nonsense.
Foreigners on back-to-back tourist visas are not included, they should be considered as tourists and not expats

Wondering where the 100,000s had gone, when looking for a better and easy life than they had had here? Perhaps somewhere where they can live on Food Stamps?

Anyway, with an objective view, the outlook afterwards could be quite favorable for Thailand:
    1. The economy has been not much hurt during the Covid period, an easy re-start
    2. A certain dislike of Chinese supplies (supported by foe govts) will open more chance for Thai purchases.

One may suggest their are many "managers around the world" with equally poor management skills.

But they can queue for the stamps whilst sitting in their $60,000 financed, air conditioned, SUV.
